a. MCHS, School of EMS Current classes (Paramedic and EMT-Basic) are wrapping up and students are going through the NREMT written testing. All are doing well.

Paramedic and EMT-Basic classes start again Sept. 8th. We will be holding two sessions of each course. Paramedic will be Mon./Tue./Thu. either 0800-1200 or 1800-2200. EMT-Basic will be on Mon./Wed. 0800-1200 and Tue./Thu. 1800-2200. The EMS program has had record enrollment numbers with these incoming classes. We will also be hosting an outreach EMT-Basic course in Stuart.

Mercy College of Health Sciences will award up to 36 credits for previous paramedic training if you enroll in a degree program. Credit will be awarded upon successful completion of the other required courses for the degree that you are pursuing. For further information, please feel free to contact David Filipp, EMS Program Chair, at (515) 643-7498.

b. DMACC -DMACC will be offering the following programs:

Two on campus EMT B courses this fall starting August 26th and Sept 1st respectively. The courses will meet Monday and Wednesday night from 18:00 – 22:00 and Tuesday and Thursday night from 18:00 – 22:00. Both of these courses are currently full with 34 students respectively. If anyone is still interested in one of these two courses, I would suggest checking with myself or DMACC registration periodically to see if there are any last minute student cancellations.

Off site EMT B course in Pella starting Sept 10 until December 10. The class will meet Monday and Thursday night from 18:00 – 22:00 at the Pella Community Ambulance Building. Contact DMACC registration to sign up at 515-964-6800.

Off site First Responder class in Truro starting Sept 8th until late Oct. The course will meet twice a week starting Sept 8th from 18:00 until 22:00 at the Truro High School. Contact DMACC registration to sign up at 515-964-6800.

We will continue to offer two EMT B courses per semester on the Ankeny campus for the foreseeable future due to increased demand for this course.

DMACC is still on schedule to offer an EMT – PS course in 2010.

c. MGMC – No report

2. CIEMS/CIEMSD – Brian Helland asked for this item to be placed on the agenda but was unable to attend the meeting. Katy Hill representing Iowa Health System and the Central Iowa EMS Conference Committee was in attendance. Katy was exploring the option of incorporating the NREMT Basic Refresher weekend that is regularly sponsored by the association into the CIEMS Conference that is scheduled for 2/27 & 28/2010 at the West DSM Marriott.

This would require an additional day (Friday) to be added to the conference to assure participants achieve the required 24 hours. Previous refresher programs sponsored by the association resulted in a breakeven or profit, they have not been operated at a loss. Additional cost would also be incurred by the conference that would need to be offset by registration fees.

Discussion also focused on the options of:

a. Integrating the refresher into the existing conference Planning committee would need to assure that topics matched the requirements of the NREMT for a 24 hour refresher.

b. Adding an additional track to the conference that would be specific to the refresher.

Katy was informed that the Training Committee was interested in working with the conference in this endeavor, however, we would need to present it at the September 28, 2009 CIEMSD Meeting for approval.

3. MCI Training – The Operations Committee is working on final revisions to the Polk County MCI Plan. As this plan is completed they would like the Training Committee to consider developing training outlines that would educate departments on the scope of the plan and the role of responding agencies. The committee agreed to develop the training outlines once the completed plan is available. Possible development of two training plans, one for service directors and a second one for providers.

4. EMS and Fire Skills competency program was tabled until next meeting.

5. QI/QA Initiatives – It would appear that follow-up forms are being used by Mercy and Iowa Health System Hospitals. We now need to move forward and develop a procedure for requesting follow-up and secure method for follow-up to be returned to the requesting agencies. James Sargent is developing a form template that we may be able to use online with the website. Will discuss further at the next meeting.

6. Future committee projects / direction – where do we go from here?

a. Airway Management Program
