ADVANCED PLACEMENT BIOLOGY - 2016

STRONGLY SUGGESTED SUMMER ASSIGNMENT

MS. VOGEL

** PLEASE PICK UP & SIGN OUT YOUR AP BIO BOOK IN ROOM 311

STARTING ON TUESDAY, MAY 31st **

Welcome to AP Biology! This is an advanced course for students capable of completing college level work; I am excited that you decided to take on this challenge and I look forward to having you in class! Enrollment in this course is a commitment to perform at the highest level and to display a positive attitude. To maximize your skills and to perform proficiently at this advanced level, considerable time will be spent on assignments, labs, and projects both in class and at home; I expect a true commitment on your part to devote the time necessary for your success.

In order to complete all the required topics and to ensure you do well on the AP Exam next May, it is strongly suggested you work on this assignment. Chapters 1 – 5 will be assigned the first week of school as a “Take-Home” assignment, while I teach other topics. You will have 2 weeks to complete all five chapters, and I will spend little time reviewing this material for your first major exam.

In the fall, you will be receiving a brand new AP Book – but for this assignment, I will loan you the “old” AP Book. You will return this to me in September.

To properly prepare you for this year, I strongly urge you to complete the following chapter study guides. This material is 100% REVIEW of concepts that was taught in Honors Biology. I will not be collecting this assignment, nor will I be reviewing chapters 1 – 3 in class. These 5 chapters will be included in your first Unit Exam of the year. This summer assignment will be an excellent study guide…you won’t be sorry!

1) Read the following 5 chapters and check that you can answer the Self-Quizzes at the end of the chapters. You may take your own notes from the text, but this is not a requirement

Chapter 1: Themes in the Study of Life

Chapter 2: The Chemical Context of Life

Chapter 3: Water and Life

Chapter 4: Carbon and the Molecular Diversity of Life

Chapter 5: The Structure & Function of Large Biological Molecules

2) Guided reading packets for each of the chapters listed above are posted on my website on School Wires. Print out each study guide and provide a brief (but thorough) response for each question. Complete sentences are not necessary! In fact, many answers require one word; others may require a sentence or two. This will help you focus on the important concepts of each chapter. All of this information was covered in your Bio I course, so this is a review!

3) Topics will only be discussed briefly in class; I will provide PowerPoint presentations (posted online) and distribute review questions before your assessment, but these study guides will be your main source of review.

There still will be time to enjoy your summer – I promise!

Come in prepared, refreshed, and ready to learn!

HAVE A GREAT SUMMER. LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU IN THE FALL! (
