3rd Quarter Project: Clinical Role-Plays

The project for this quarter will be a group effort among 2-5 members. It is designed to give you an opportunity to explore some of the information in chapters 16 and 17: Psychological Disorders and Therapy. Each group will be assigned a mental illness and a therapy perspective (we will draw these out of a hat). The setting for each role-play is a therapist-patient visit in a clinical setting (an office visit or a mental hospital). You will video your group's presentation and we will watch the videos in class. Below are the specific descriptions for each member of the group and their assignments. Each individual should have an active and equal part in the completion of the project (all individuals should be in the video).

Role 1: Presenter: The presenter acts as the narrator and is responsible for giving any necessary background information so the audience understands the disorder and therapy as a backdrop to the role-play. This is also the person who should present any visuals (poster, statistics, etc.) that the group feels will add to the presentation. The presenter's main duty is to give an overview of the disorder and the therapy perspective

Be sure to include the following:

Disorder Background:

1. Diagnostic Criteria

2. Prevalence

3. Specific culture, age and gender features…why?

4. Theories of cause…both genetic and environmental

5. Associated features

6. Discuss one or two case studies (your role play should be one of these…i.e. give the background and history of your mental patient)

Therapy background:

1. A brief history of your therapy…when did it come into being, major people associated with it, did it have a heyday, does it play a major part in psych today

2. Describe the general approach of your therapy

3. Describe the specific approach of how your therapy would treat your specific disorder before you role play it out

*****Remember that in addition to your specific therapy perspective you are all going to consider biology…if you were a psychiatrist, what type of medication would you likely prescribe your patient in addition to the therapy you will use with them?

Role 2: Therapist: The therapist should be very familiar with the style of therapy assigned to the group. The therapist needs to stay in role of that particular design. The therapist should be sincere and accurate.

Role 3: Patient: The patient needs to be very familiar with the disorder so as to act it out sufficiently. The patient should be sincere and accurate.

Your group will need to divide up the tasks equally and will need to meet several times together to coordinate your research, write your script, practice your role play and video it. Choose your groups wisely: people you will get along with and be able to meet with outside of school.

The textbook will be a good place to jumpstart your research, but you will also need to seek out additional sources. The DSM-V will also be invaluable for researching the disorder. You should also seek out additional books, read some case studies and possibly view some videos that pertain to your case. News magazines with articles on your disorder (U.S. News, Time, etc.) will also prove helpful.

The day you turn in your video, your group must also turn in a hard copy bibliography with at least six collective sources. This should be typed up in MLA style and there should be one Works Cited sheet turned in per group.

Due date: Monday March 7 (B day) and Tuesday March 8 (A day)

- Your video and works cited page for the group will be due at the beginning of class on 3/7 or 3/8. These WILL NOT be accepted late. Anything not turned in on the due date will be a zero for the entire group.

Grade: Your grade will be based on the following criteria:

- meeting minimum requirements

- thoroughness of information

- accuracy of information

- organization and clarity of information

- creativity of your script and role-play.

Since students are selecting their own group mates, each group will get one grade that will count the same for each individual group member. As usual, this project will count 20% of your 3rd quarter grade.
