Text: Psychology by David Meyers (9th edition)

Methodology: The information in this course will be presented in a variety of ways. There will be lectures, class projects, audio visual aids, and guest speakers. Psychology is a fascinating science and we will explore this field through a variety of methods.

AP Course Demands: It should be understood at the outset that the expectations of this course are consistent with those of any Advanced Placement course. Students should expect a workload similar to what they would have if they were to complete this course at the college level. This includes extensive reading, active involvement in class discussions, taking notes, and doing research. One goal of this course is to prepare students to take the AP exam in May. Students who receive a passing grade on this exam are eligible to receive credit for an introductory psychology course on their college transcript.

AP Exam: Monday, May 2, 2016, noon

Quarter Projects: A significant project will be assigned each quarter. These are designed to introduce you to the various types of research that are done in psychology and will count 20% of each quarter grade.

Grade Breakdown:

Homework/Classwork assignments: 20% (10% each) (approx 9/quarter)

Quizzes: 20% (approximately 4/quarter)

Quarter Projects: 20% (1 per quarter)

Unit Tests: 40% (approximately 2 per quarter)

Students will also take cumulative semester and final exams that will work into their semester and final grades. The final exam will count 20% of the student’s year end grade (5th quarter).

All assignments will be expected on the due date at the beginning of class. Students may turn an assignment in one class day after the due date for a lower letter grade. After the one grace day, work will not be accepted and a zero will be recorded. HW should be handed in during class time and will not be accepted via e-mail. All work will be graded and returned in a timely fashion and students may inquire about their grade at any point. Additionally, an official progress report will be issued in the middle of each quarter. Students will be expected to do their own work on all assignments, including homework. Cheating and copying will not be tolerated. Infractions will result in a zero on the assignment and a referral to administration.

Attendance and Make Up Work: Students are expected to attend school regularly to achieve academic success. Requesting assignments upon returning to school and completing them in a prompt manner is the responsibility of the student!

Extra Credit: Each quarter I will keep a running list of EC options posted in my room. Extra credit assignments are worth a possible 20 points to be added to a quiz or HW grade. Students may do a maximum of 3 EC assignments per quarter. All EC will be due one week before the end of each quarter to be counted on that quarter grade.

Expectations:

1. Read the textbook and extra articles as assigned

2. Be in class on time and prepared, with assignments for that day completed

3. Contribute to class discussions

4. Respect everyone in the classroom

5. Do your own work

You will get out of this class, (as far as your grade, interest, and enjoyment) what you put into it.

I will be available before and after school to help students in any way I can. Parents and students, please feel free to come see me or e-mail me with any questions at any time.
