PAPER AND PRESENTATION GUIDELINES

PAPER AND PRESENTATION GUIDELINES

INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY

PAPER PARTICULARS

▪ You will be randomly assigned both a book and a topic to apply to that book.

▪ Include an introduction and conclusion. The main points and thesis of your paper should be identified in the introduction.

▪ Include not only an in depth analysis of your topic and how it specifically relates to the book, but also your own thoughts. Try to be as unique and creative as possible. First person language is permissible, but use judiciously. You want to create a logical argument to support your topic that is not opinion. Remember the assignment is to creatively relate your philosophical topic to the book. This is not a book report, but a synthesis between the novel and paper topic. You will basically be arguing for the paper topic using examples and analysis from the novel.

▪ It is not sufficient to provide a general analysis of your book and topic. You need to provide specific, substantive examples that relate the book to your topic. It needs to be clear that not only did you read the entire book, but that you have created a well-constructed connection between the book the topic.

▪ 5-7 pages in length

▪ Must be typed

▪ Times New Roman font

▪ 12 point font size

▪ Double spaced

▪ Make sure to cite properly and when necessary (plagiarism of any form will result in a failing grade). Please refer to my faculty web page for sources on plagiarism. Remember plagiarism can either be intentional or unintentional and either category with result in a failing grade and possibly the course.

▪ Any citation style is accepted: MLA, APA, footnotes, endnotes, etc. I have citation help websites located on my faculty web page. If you reference any reading from the course, it must be cited. You will also need to cite the book you read.

▪ A works cited page is required and you must include your book on the citation page, as well as any other source or assigned reading from class.

▪ Remember that direct quotes require quotation marks and in-text documentation. Any quote over four lines requires block quote format.

▪ Make sure your paper is well organized and easily understood

▪ Everyone will sign-up for the day they want to give their presentation (remember the sooner you get it over with, the less you will have to do at the end of the semester).

▪ Once you sign-up for your paper/presentation it will not be possible for you to change the date.

▪ Due the day you sign-up for before your presentation

▪ Worth 50 points

▪ Do not give an overview of the story in the paper. Remember you audience, in this case me, has read each book more than once. Again, this assignment is not a book report.

PRESENTATION

▪ The presentation is an oral overview of your paper (make sure to include all the key points from your paper). It is acceptable in the presentation to provide a brief overview of the novel. Roughly two minutes or less. Remember, most of the class has read a different book.

▪ Everyone will sign-up for the day they want to give their presentation

▪ Once you sign-up it will not be possible to change dates

▪ A minimum of 10 minutes and a maximum of 15 minutes in length

▪ Points will be deducted for short presentations.

▪ Visual aids or hand-outs may be used but are not required. If using PowerPoint, do not read directly from slides or put too much information on the slides.

▪ You may include why you agree or disagree with the novel or any of the authors we have discussed in class that you cover in your paper.

▪ Speak in a clear tone that is easily understood

▪ Make sure your key points are well organized and flow together. You can include a brief summary of your book in the presentation.

▪ Video clips are permitted but limited to 2 minutes (combined for all video clips).

▪ Worth 50 points

NOTES

1. If you absolutely have your heart set on a different book or topic, then make an appointment to see me and present the reasons why you want to switch. If you choose an alternative topic/book, you need to meet with me as soon as possible. Do not wait until presentations start.

2. Please be aware that some of these books contain mature content: adult language, violence, etc. Again, if you want to change books, then seen the previous note.
