Code of Ethical Conduct at Chevron

For the current purpose, the paper discusses the code of ethical conduct introduced by the company Chevron, which is in the business of oil exploration and production. Chevron has lined up products and services such as exploration of oil and natural gas, refining operations, fuels, lubricants, and additives. Global trading, pipelines, and shipping are other ventures that have become part of the company production processes. Apart from these, the company has interest in chemicals, power, mining, and introduction of innovative technology to meet environmental standards and competition. The company supplies raw materials as well as finished products to global consumers (Chevron, 2014).

Important issues that are critical for the success of company’s business ethics and code of conduct are protection of employee interest, avoiding conflict of interest, government affairs and political involvement. The issues become important because they show that the company is actually committed to protect interest of employees and members of the society. For instance, the company protects employee interest by acting as equal opportunity employer, preventing workplace violence and harassment, and encouraging workers to avoid use of alcohol in the workplace. The company does not support any political party through funding, and employees cannot indulge in practices such as giving gift and donation to political party members (Chevron, 2014).

Schwartz (2013) shows that companies need to provide “ethical leadership” to exhibit their commitment to ethical business, which respects the law of the land and participates in ethical activities. To show this commitment, the organization needs to prepare a document highlighting its basic principles related to ethical code of conduct (Schwartz, 2013).
