Sergeant-at-Arms

Ralph had fun with several of us this morning. A big chuckle as to Harry’s move to a new table. Always it is time to change things up. Both Dave L. and Dale happy to be back home. Dave L. reminded us that any advertising is good advertising. Tess was delighted with her time with her daughters. Michael went to his first Canucks game. Too bad they lost. Brought to our attention was that April 7th marks the kick-off of the Canadian Transplant Association organ donor awareness campaign in honour of Humboldt Bronco member Logan Boulet.

Harry’s winning ticket did not produce the joker. Next week the pot is $ 170.

Randy spoke about Rotarian Action Groups (RAG). These are international in scope special interest groups that give Rotarians opportunities to engage in service activities in a field they are passionate about. By area of focus there are RAG promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water and sanitation, growing local economies, saving mothers and children and supporting education. Randy enjoys his participation in a RAG that does micro financing in the Honduras.

CLASSIFICATION TALK

Sheila shared with us some of her life’s journey,

her personality and her pleasant sense of humour.

Born in the Yukon, Sheila grew up in Europe and finished her teen years back in Canada. Because her dad was in the Air force, Sheila and her 3 brothers lived in 10 different cities and changed schools many times. At a young age, Sheila had the opportunity to enter a human resources trainee program. This initial training led to a long and successful career in employee training and career counselling within the Federal government. In her late 40’s, while working full time, Sheila obtained her degree in psychology.

Approaching retirement, husband Richard secured a research position at Nanaimo’s Pacific Biological Station in 2005. Until his passing, Richard was a valuable, get on with it member of our Club. He is dearly missed by everyone.

Sheila is enjoying her new found Rotary friends and looks forward to learning more about us. In

retirement, she wants to challenge her creative talents. Please do ask her about her newest projects.

Worth Repeating

Annual Golf Tournament

The Golf Tournament, our Major fundraiser, is happening on Friday, May 3rd, 2019 at Fairwinds. Our success helps us help our community. This will be our 23rd year.

The major beneficiary will be the Island Crisis Care Society. They operate Samaritan House which provides services for women in crisis. Always, this has been a fun club event with opportunities for everyone to participate.

This morning everyone had an opportunity to discuss where we are, where we need to go to meet our financial goals for the golf tournament.

The biggest push for the next couple of weeks is for golfers and sponsors. Prizes are slowly coming in. Please do watch your inbox for further email requests and reminders.

Club Business

On behalf of our community services committee, Dale presented a cheque in the amount of $ 1,000 to Darby and her Gymnaestrada team and $ 2,000 to R.O.A.R. board member Anne Manikel.

APRIL IS MATERNAL & CHILD HEALTH MONTH

[pic]

Did you know nearly 7 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care and poor sanitation – all of which can be prevented? Rotary and Rotarians provide education, immunizations, birth kits, and mobile health clinics worldwide. Women are taught how to prevent HIV transmissions, how to breast-feed, and how to protect themselves and their children from disease. Rotary makes amazing things happen, like: mobile prenatal clinics in Haiti, cancer screenings in India and injury preventions in Nigeria. Maternal & Health Care is one of Rotary’s Six areas of focus.
