The Business of Fashion, Textiles and Technology is focused on delivering innovation and growth throughout the entire fashion and textile supply chain, from manufacturing to retail. Over the next five years, the Arts & Humanities Research Council’s Creative Industries Clusters Programme will strengthen the creative industries’ position as vital to UK economic growth and resilience, and provide direct links into shaping Government policy.UAL’s Research is assessed as being 83% World Leading and International in the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) for Art & Design, History, Practice, Theory; is ranked a top 5 Research University in its broader peer group in the UK and first in the Power ranking for Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory category.London College of Fashion (LCF) is one of six constituent colleges at the University of the Arts London (UAL) with a comprehensive academic fashion portfolio, which includes: sustainable design; footwear; communication design; film and digital media; psychology; cosmetic science; social science; curation; cultural studies; business studies; creative branding and marketing. LCF hosts the UAL Research Centres in: Sustainable Fashion; Fashion Business Research and Innovation; and the Digital Anthropology Lab. Facilities include extensive fashion archives, collections and specialist library.Holition is an award-winning augmented reality (AR) company, supplying technical solutions to the fashion retail sector. They are a core partner in the Business of Fashion, Textiles and Technology Creative R&D Partnership, where they lead a work stream devoted to designing and delivering the next generation of fashion retail technologies and consumer experiences.This PhD Scholarship Partnership opportunity invites innovative proposals that span research into the design, development and implementation of augmented reality technologies for the visualisation of fashion product. There will be a particular focus on tackling garment fit, whereby virtual garments must appear to fit to the physical user’s body shape. Projects might focus on using computer vision, machine learning and AI to interrogate issues surrounding data capture and realistic texture and surface modelling for virtual garments.Applicants should hold, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in a related Computer Science, Engineering or Mathematics discipline with strong programming skills (e.g. C/C++, Python, Matlab) and knowledge of artificial intelligence and computer vision. A relevant Master’s degree and/or experience in machine learning and deep learning is desirable.
