Subject: End of Year Report

Date: April 18, 2010

The FGC is charged with reviewing and ranking various internal grant programs. During the academic year, the committee performed the following duties:

• The Former Co-Chair (Katherine Teeter) and the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies, Research and Continuing Education held a workshop on September 29 devoted to NMU’s grant programs.

• The Former Co-Chair and another FGC member participated in the selection of the Excellence in Professional Development Award winners.

Fall 2009 Spooner Grants:

Six applications were reviewed. The committee ranks undergraduate and graduate applications separately. The undergraduate applications were ranked as follows: 1: Benjamin Wilson (Chemistry); 2: Darren Moir (Art & Design); 3: Anders Gillis (History). The graduate applications were ranked as follows: 1: Danny LeBert (Biology); 1: Vanessa Thibado (Biology); 3: Christopher Linforth (English).

Faculty Grants:

Seventeen Faculty Grants proposals were reviewed and all were deemed fundable. The proposals were ranked as follows: 1: Bao Truong (Mathematics); 2: Qinghong Zhang (Mathematics); 3: Rebecca Mead (History); 4: Alec Lindsay (Biology); 5: Tara Foster (Modern Languages); 6: Joel Thompson (Business); 7: Peter Pless (Art & Design); 8: Sandra Burr (English); 9: Yan Liu (Chemistry); 10: Donald Marquardt (Chemistry); 11: Randy Appleton (Mathematics); 12: Erich Ottem (Biology); 13: Austin Hummell (English); 14: Shelley Russell (CAPS); 15: Thomas Getman (Chemistry); 16: Jaspal Singh (English); 17: Bill Mihalopoulos (History).

Fall 2009 Reassigned Time Awards:

Twenty-three applications were reviewed. Four applications were deemed unfundable. Ten awards (the number stipulated by the AAUP Master Agreement 6.5.1.3) were recommended for funding (in rank order): 1: Gabriel Brahm (English); 2: David Wood (English); 3: Derek Anderson (Education); 4: Hsin-Ling Hsieh (Economics); 5: Lesley Larkin (English); 6: Erich Ottem (Biology); 7: Michael Joy (Modern Languages); 8: Catherine Terwilliger (English); 9: K.C. Holder (Education); 10: Robert Legg (Geography).

Winter 2010 Spooner Grants:

Four proposals were submitted. Two were deemed unfundable. The committee ranks undergraduate and graduate applications separately. The undergraduate application was ranked as follows: 1: Rachel Koleda (Biology). The graduate application was ranked as follows: 1: Tori LaFleur (Biology).

Winter 2010 Reassigned Time Awards:

Eight proposals were submitted. Three were deemed unfundable. With twelve awards to be distributed in 2010-11 (the number stipulated by the AAUP Master Agreement 6.5.1.3), the committee voted to approve the five fundable applications, with the remaining seven awards to be assigned in Fall 2010. The proposals recommended for funding were (in alphabetical order): 1: Gabriel Brahm (English); 2: Nanci Gasiewicz (Nursing); 3: Amy Hamilton (English); 4: Lesley Larkin (English); 5: Melissa Romero (Nursing).

Peter White Grants:

Three proposals were submitted. One was deemed unfundable. The remaining two were ranked as follows: 1: John Smolens (English); 2: Thomas Getman (Chemistry).

Instructional Improvement Grants (II)/Curriculum Development Grants (CD):

Six Instructional Improvement Grant applications were submitted. All were deemed fundable. The proposals were ranked as follows: 1: Terry Delpier and Kristi Burdick (Nursing); 2: Derek Anderson (Education); 3: Rebecca Ulland (Modern Languages); 4: Robert Regis (Geography); 5: Craig Rademacher (HPER); 6: Joseph Lubig (Education).

Two Curriculum Development Grant applications were submitted. One was deemed unfundable. The remaining grant was ranked as follows: 1: Joseph Lubig (Education).

Summer 2010 Spooner Grants:

One proposal was submitted and was deemed fundable. The graduate proposal was ranked as follows: 1: Aaron Payment (Education).

Approved Motions:

• The Faculty Grants committee devised a mechanism for assigning “preference” to probationary faculty in line with section 6.5.1.1 of the 2009-12 AAUP Master Agreement. The evaluation procedure will be made available on the Grants and Research website.

• The Faculty Grants committee is requesting that the maximum award in the Faculty Grants program be raised to $10,000. A similar proposal was brought to the senate in October 2006, but no action was taken.
