AP Human Geography

Current Event Instructions APHG

Description: Each day at the beginning of class students will present a current event article that relates to human geography. As the year progresses, students may be assigned specific countries, regions, or concepts to focus their current event research on.

Directions: Students will be given a schedule at the beginning of each current event cycle, that includes their name and the date of their presentation to the class.

THE DAY BEFORE YOU ARE EXPECTED TO PRESENT TO THE CLASS, YOU MUST EMAIL ME THE LINK (URL) TO THE ARTICLE

- failure to do this will result in an automatic deduction of 5 points. As the year progresses, students may be denied to the right to present their presentation and will be given a 0 for the assignment, if the article is not emailed.

- On your scheduled presentation date, you should be ready to go as soon as the tardy bell rings.

*********IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH YOUR EMAIL…simply place a comment ANYWHERE on the website. Any comments made are always directly emailed to me. Please send a copy of the email to yourself as well…not only is that proof that you sent it (with the time and date on it), but if something goes wrong with the school email system…we can just pull up the article from your email.********* Do not tell me that the email would not send…or you sent it and I didn’t receive it…the internet ate it…etc…

The sources listed below are excellent sources of world news, but this is only a limited list. Try to stay away from blogs.

Steps to completing current events:

1) Choosing an article: Once you have chosen your article, send the URL to Mrs. Albahae on the course website, THE DAY BEFORE YOU ARE SCHEDULED TO PRESENT TO THE CLASS! The first time you do this, you will email it as well.

2) Finding a visual: Usually, internet articles tend to have a picture with the content. If it does not, try to find a picture that represents your article. You may have to attach a picture separately.

3) Presenting: On the day of your presenting, the link you sent to me will be projected (along with a picture if that was separate) on the screen to provide the class with a visual of your article.

- You are allowed to have a written summary to refer to as you make your presentation to the class. Please make sure that you do not need to rely on your summary for the information, it should be used as a reference only!

1. You will have 5-8 minutes to present an oral summary of your article to the class

2. Within your summary, you will need to tell the class how your chosen event relates to concepts in human geography. Be sure to include what region, country or population that is impacted by your event.

3. Explain your choice of picture (or other visual aid) and how it relates to your event.

4. Ask the class if they have any questions…answer any if there are!

***** Make sure you make a connection between your article and human geography!!!******
