Reconstruction Newspaper Project

Reconstruction Newspaper Project

Instructions: Students will create a newspaper from the Reconstruction era. Your paper can be from either the North or the South (the opinions of writers from these two regions would be much different). Your paper will have four different sections:

1) One Factual News Story: Your paper must contain one news story based on factual events. If the event is closely related to Reconstruction, the event you write about is up to you. Your information MUST be accurate. The article should be at least 150 words long.

2) One editorial (an article based on the opinions of the writer): Your paper must contain an editorial article. The editorial should be at least 150 words long. Select one of the following to write your editorial about:

- President Lincoln’s 10% Plan

- President Johnson’s veto of the Freedmen’s Bureau Act

- The Freedmen’s Bureau

- Military Reconstruction

- The 13th, 14th or 15th Amendment

- Topic of your choice (MUST BE PRE-APPROVED BY TEACHER).

3) Political cartoon: Your paper must contain an original (not copied and pasted from the internet) political cartoon that makes a statement about a specific aspect of Reconstruction. Your cartoon MUST include a caption explaining what the cartoon means.

4) Classified section: Your paper must contain a classified section with five entries. Each entry should be around 20 words in length. These can be advertising both job openings and/or items from sale.

Use the article provided, notes from class, and your textbook to help you write your articles and complete your newspaper. You should look over the information, decide what you want to write about, and take notes. YOUR ARTICLES MUST BE IN YOUR OWN WORDS. DO NOT COPY INFORMATION FROM YOUR NOTES, YOUR TEXTBOOK, OR THE INFORMATION PROVIDED TO YOU! Make sure that your information is accurate!

PROJECT IS DUE: MAY 22ND
