JOB DESCRIPTIONTITLE: Nursery Assistant REPORTS TO: Nursery Manager CLASSIFICATION: Permanent, Part-time; Non- Exempt; HourlyINTRODUCTION: The Bok Tower Garden’s Nursery strives to produce most of the plant material used in the organization, except large trees, turf, and large quantities of specialty plant material.? Plant material is propagated from seed, cuttings, and divisions.? The individual chosen as the assistant in the nursery will have the opportunity to propagate, grow, and display annuals, bromeliads, orchids, perennials, seasonal color, trees, vegetables, and woody ornamentals.JOB SUMMARY:? Assist with the daily operations of Bok Tower Garden’s nursery as instructed by the Nursery Manager. ? Work with both staff and volunteers to produce and maintain plant material for the Garden landscape such as annuals, perennials and woody plants. ? Maintain records of all plant production and inventory in the nursery ? Coordinate, encourage and cultivate a volunteer force in the nursery ? Apply the pesticide and fertilizers as needed in the greenhouse, shade house and outdoor nursery. Maintain the nursery grounds that will require the following tasks: weeding, repairing weed cloth and pruning Provide floral arrangements for special events as scheduled by the Director of Horticulture. DUTIES:Care of all plant material raised in the nursery: irrigate, weed, fertilize, pot, label, take inventory and organize nursery Coordinate with Nursery Manager for care of the nursery on Manager’s days off.Assist in records and files for nursery management as well as plant production work orders for efficient production of materials. Coordinate volunteer staff in nursery assignments as needed. Schedule and present educational programs for the nursery volunteer staff to improve their work skills.Help monitor trial plant material to evaluate in the nursery for possible use in the garden landscape.Apply pesticides in a safe and prudent manner when required. Record all applications of the pesticides in the application log. Manage the pesticide inventory. Keep equipment in good working condition. Visually inspect and maintain nursery area through irrigation, mowing, herbiciding, and weeding. EducationAssociates degree or Bachelor’s degree in nursery production, horticulture or related fieldMust possess a Florida Pesticide Applicators license, and drivers license ................
