Recognized Student Organizations Graduate Assistant

General Statement of Purpose and Duties

The Recognized Student Organizations (RSO) Graduate Assistant is a member of the Student Involvement staff and is responsible for assisting in the delivery and implementation of the office strategic plan. Student Involvement is responsible for the coordination of programs and services that engage WSU students in co-curricular programs designed to enhance their overall learning experience. Student Involvement supports over 278 student organizations, 23 fraternity/sorority chapters, the Student Activities Council, the Student Government Association, Cadman Art Gallery, coordinates Alternative Brakes, sponsors civic engagement opportunities, organizes Campus Traditions and provides leadership development programs. This position has the core responsibility of working with Recognized Student Organizations.

The position entails a mix of administrative tasks, Recognized Student Organization management and communication, event planning and management, assisting with major events, and implementing effective marketing plans for Student Involvement and RSO events and trainings. The RSO Graduate Assistant will be primarily responsible for working with student organizations and Shocker 360 at Wichita State University and other projects as assigned by the Assistant Director of Student Involvement. This position requires an individual who is organized, energetic, creative, and leadership-oriented.

Reports to: The RSO Graduate Assistant is under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Student Involvement.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Manage the new student organization formation process

2. Provide guidance and consultation for potential new student organizations, as well as current student organizations

3. Oversee the re-registration process of all student organizations in the fall and spring

4. Manage the master list of all Recognized Student Organizations

5. Update student organizational publications (RSO Updates, Student Organization Handbook and Advisor Manual)

6. Create development opportunities for student organizations to navigate event planning and other policies

7. Assist in the oversight of ShockerSync

8. Assist with planning of large involvement fairs and events, such as Involvement Fair, Nuts and Bolts, Springfest and Shocker Leadership Awards

9. Create and implement a marketing plan to raise awareness of involvement opportunities and workshops offered.

10. Assist in the facilitation of Shocker 360. Work with staff to enter events and initiatives into the platform, approve student participation, facilitate surveys to students, and educate and train students and staff on how to use the platform.

11. Serve as a staff member of Student Involvement by regularly attending staff meetings and events, engaging in professional development and position related educational opportunities and support all office functions

12. Represent the department on University committees and external assignments

13. Perform other duties and functions of Student Involvement as assigned

Required Qualifications:

• Awarded a Bachelor's degree.

• Must maintain good academic standing.

• Must be a graduate student at Wichita State University and enrolled in at least 6 credit hours.

• Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Enrolled in the Masters of Educational Leadership program with an emphasis in Student Affairs.

• Have experience in event planning.

• Possess strong attention to detail and organization.

• Have the ability to work with a diverse group of people.

• Have the ability to relate and work well with students.

• Have experience and understanding of marketing and promotions.

• Have experience in Microsoft Office, some knowledge of Adobe Suites and website development.

• Possess knowledge of social media and how to utilize social media in event development and marketing.

• Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Have the ability to provide guidance and support and inspire others to action.

• Perform in an ethical and professional manner.

• Have the ability to promote collaboration among people and encourage group participation in decisions and goal setting.

Compensation

• Stipend is expected to be $3,600 per semester

• In-state tuition waiver, covering up to 15 credit hours (does not cover fees)

• Health coverage is available with optional dental and vision coverage

• 10% discount on textbooks in the Shocker Store

Terms of Appointment

• Anticipated start date of August 9, 2021.

• The assistantship is renewable during fall and spring semesters for up to two years and requires a 20 hour/week minimum commitment. Some weekend and evening hours will be required.
