Tennis ranking and assessment - Marryatville High School

SPECIAL INTEREST TENNIS

Program Entry Requirements and Assessment and Accreditation

The special interest tennis program at Marryatville High School began in 1996 to enable students to successfully combine the rigors of academic studies with tennis. The program has a rich history of success across a range of educational platforms and is continually striving to build off this wonderful record.

Special interest students enroll in tennis as a subject in years 8 to 10. At year 10, tennis is studied as a SACE Stage 1 subject, which allows students to free up their year 11 timetables for further academic studies.

As a timetabled subject, tennis students spend two double lessons per week involved in practical coaching and the remaining single lesson engaging in subject specific theory, such as analysing the tactical, technical, physical and psychological aspects of tennis, fitness, anatomy and physiology, nutrition, energy systems, tournament organisation etc.

As an extension to the two compulsory practical sessions, students are also offered the voluntary opportunity to be involved in an extended program which allows students to engage in additional practical coaching each week at a fee to be negotiated.

Coaching occurs in squads of a maximum of eight students to one accredited coach.

Traditionally to gain entry to the special interest program, prospective Australian students must have an Australian tennis ranking (ATR) for boys of 2000 or less and for girls 1000 or less. This ranking indicates that students are playing at a competitive level and have the necessary skills to successfully complete squad drilling. In addition to this students intending to gain entry to Marryatville High School via the special interest program will need to meet the following criteria:

Have a demonstrated commitment to engaging with the academic program from which they come

A letter of recommendation from their school principal or delegate that speaks to their character strengths

A willingness to be a role model for the Marryatville High School community

A nominated tennis referee such as a private coach or club president

Students who do not meet the Australian tennis rankings criteria but wish to be considered for entry into the program must meet the following:

Stage 1

The student will need to submit a letter of application, supported by a relevant testimonial letter indicating why entry should be granted. This application should be supported by video evidence, demonstrating an ability to drill successfully. Such evidence should clearly show the students ability to:

Serve, volley and maintain a competitive rally on both the forehand and backhand sides

Evidence of competitive play

Stage 2

On court coaching assessment at Marryatville High School

All students enrolled in the special interest tennis program are expected to compete in Saturday morning tennis competitions for Marryatville High School during terms 1 and 4 and this involvement constitutes a part of their term assessment.

Students are expected to purchase the special interest tennis uniform, specifically, a Marryatville High School tennis shirt and jacket, as well as navy blue shorts and tracksuit pants. In general student assessment is based on a number of different criteria and is reflective of a student's skill level, attitude/co-operation, participation and theoretical knowledge. The following specific aspects will be considered when grades are allocated for assessment:

Practical skill level Demonstrated movement and skill improvement Completion of training diary and match play sheets Completion of physical program given to students ? including beep test results and

improvements Participation and attendance at practical and theory sessions ? this includes having all correct

equipment, being punctual, wearing of correct uniform and having a positive, professional attitude at all times. Completion of class theory work (including assignment work, worksheets, tests, folders, homework) Participation in school tennis ? Saturday morning teams, SSSSA tennis competition term 1 and junior/senior knockout tennis teams if selected. Participation in Australian ranking tournaments during the year which are a personal choice. Marryatville High School has been very successful at all levels of competition since the program began ? Drive Tennis (Marryatville High School's elite team in the Sports Association for Adelaide Schools (SAAS) Competition), open boy's teams, Secondary School Sport of South Australia (SSSSA) knockout competitions, SSSSA individual championships and national school team's tennis championships. In 2013 the Marryatville High School boys team represented Australia at the International Sports Federation Tennis Championships held here in Australia.
