Meeting Minutes

February 19, 2009

1. Call to Order - The meeting was called to order by Dennis Bertch at 8:00am.

2. Minutes of November 20, 2008 – The minutes were approved as submitted.

3. Review/Revise/Approve Agenda – The agenda was approved as distributed.

4. Announcements/Updates – None

5. Board of Trustees Action – Reviewed curriculum approved by the Board of Trustees at their January 13, 2009 meeting. Be sure to share the memo detailing the curriculum changes with the department chairs.

1. Program Inactivations

1. Sonography, PAC

The Sonography post associates certificate program has never been offered. The courses that were created for this program; DMS 100, Intro to Diagnostic Medical Sonography, DMS 110, Physics of Diagnostic Medical Sonography, DMS 120 Abdominal Sonography, and DMS 130 Obstetrical and Gynecological Sonography were never offered and were endorsed for inactivation at the September 18, 2008 Course & Curriculum Council meeting.

Following discussion, a Motion was made, Seconded, and carried to endorse the inactivation of the Sonography, PAC. Subject to final review, the vice president for academic services will recommend to the president that this program inactivatiton be approved by the Board of Trustees.

2. Industrial lab Technician, COA

3. Senior Lab Technician, COA

There is low student demand for these programs and the programs are not current with today’s industry.

4. Customer Energy Specialist, Certificate

This program was set up specifically for Consumer’s Power and they now do their own training.

5. Mechanical Engineering Technician, AAS

The title of this program was misleading to students who thought they could transfer into the Mechanical Engineering program upon completion of this program.

6. Drafting/CAD-CAM Design, AAS

7. Drafting/CAD Drafter, AAS

The above-listed programs are being inactivated as part of the reorganization of the Drafting department and will be replaced by specialized certificates of achievement and a post associate certificate.

Following discussion, a Motion was made, Seconded, and carried to endorse the inactivation of the above-listed programs. Subject to final review, the vice president for academic services will recommend to the president that these program inactivatitons be approved by the Board of Trustees.

The course numbers, titles, course content, and some strategies have been changed to provide students with sequential classes to eliminate the confusion with the current numbering system.

Following discussion, a Motion was made, Seconded, and carried to endorse the inactivation of the above-listed courses. Subject to final review, the vice president for academic services will recommend to the president that these course inactivatitons be approved by the Board of Trustees.

DRFT 150, Key Creator/CADKEY is postponed pending further information.

3. New Courses

1. FRL 163, Fingerspelling, 2-2-0 (Lecture/Discussion)

2. FRL 265, American Sign Language V, 3-3-0 (Lecture/Discussion)

FRL 163 and FRL 265 are now accepted as transfer courses to WMU and will address the specific needs of students working in the language.

Following discussion, a Motion was made, Seconded, and carried to endorse the addition of the above-listed courses. Subject to final review, the vice president for academic services will recommend to the president that these course additions be approved by the Board of Trustees.

3. WDD 180, Video Production, 3-1-6 (Lecture/Standard Lab)

CNM students must be able to produce/publish their work in easily viewable media. WDD 180 will teach students this skill.

Following discussion, a Motion was made, Seconded, and carried to endorse the addition of the above-listed course. Subject to final review, the vice president for academic services will recommend to the president that this course addition be approved by the Board of Trustees.

4. BUS 218, Creating/Managing Projects, 4-3-1 (Lecture/Standard Lab and 4-0-0 (Web)

BUS 218 will provide students with an overall understanding of the management of projects.

Following discussion, a Motion was made, Seconded, and carried to endorse the addition of the above-listed course. Subject to final review, the vice president for academic services will recommend to the president that this course addition be approved by the Board of Trustees.

D. Dawson provided information about the above courses and will provide a crosswalk between the inactivated drafting courses and the new ones listed above.

Following discussion, a Motion was made, Seconded, and carried to endorse the addition of the above-listed courses. Subject to final review, the vice president for academic services will recommend to the president that these course additions be approved by the Board of Trustees.

20. WELD 182, Rapid MIG and Flux Cored Arc Welding, 3-1-6 (Lecture/Standard Lab)

21. WELD 184, Rapid TIG Welding, 3-1-6 (Lecture/Standard Lab)

22. WELD 186, Rapid ARC Welding, 2-1-3 (Lecture/Standard Lab)

These courses were developed to better meet industry demands and will offer students the opportunity to obtain desired skills in smaller increments that will better fit their work schedules than the WELD 190 course.

Following discussion, a Motion was made, Seconded, and carried to endorse the addition of the above-listed courses. Subject to final review, the vice president for academic services will recommend to the president that these course additions be approved by the Board of Trustees.

4. Program Revisions

1. American Sign Language, COA

FRL 163 Fingerspelling was added to this program increasing the total credits from 16 to 18.

Following discussion, a Motion was made, Seconded, and carried to endorse the revision of the above-listed program. Subject to final review, the vice president for academic services will recommend to the president that these program revision be approved by the Board of Trustees.

2. Administrative Assistant, AAS

Changes to the Administrative Assistant, AAS are postponed pending further information.

3. Drafting/CAD Drafter Certificate to CAD Specialist, Certificate and increase total program credits from 32 to 34

4. Drafting/CAD Design, AAS to Computer Aided Design, AAS and decrease total program credits from 64 to 62.

Following discussion, a Motion was made, Seconded, and carried to endorse the revision of the above-listed programs. Subject to final review, the vice president for academic services will recommend to the president that these program revisions be approved by the Board of Trustees.

5. Course Revisions

1. LEN 132, Public Safety Writing, 3-3-0 (Lecture/Discussion) add Hybrid 3-3-0 and Web 3-0-0

2. COM 115, Intro to Visual Communication, 3-3-0 (Lecture/Discussion) add Hybrid 3-3-0 and Web 3-0-0

3. DRFT 100, Fundamentals of Drafting, 3-2-3 (Lecture/Standard Lab) to Fundamentals of Drafting, 3-1-6 (Lecture/Standard Lab)

4. DRFT 210, Kinematics of Mechanisms, 3-2-3 (Lecture/Standard Lab) to 3-1-6 (Lecture/Standard Lab)

Following discussion, a Motion was made, Seconded, and carried to endorse the revision of the above-listed courses. Subject to final review, the vice president for academic services will recommend to the president that these course revisions be approved by the Board of Trustees.

6. New Programs

1. AutoCAD Specialist, COA

2. Inventor Specialist, COA

3. ProEngineering Specialist, COA

4. SolidWorks Specialist, COA

5. Computer Aided Design & Manufacturing, PAC

The above programs will allow students to specialize in a particular area and allow them to be employed in that specific area.

Following discussion, a Motion was made, Seconded, and carried to endorse the addition of the above-listed programs. Subject to final review, the vice president for academic services will recommend to the president that these program additions be approved by the Board of Trustees.

7. Other

B. Kocher complimented D. Dawson, faculty, and their advisory committee for the work on reviewing/revising the drafting program.

Upon Board of Trustees approval, these additions/revisions will be published in the summer/ fall 2009 schedule of classes.

7. Next Meetings: March 26, 2009 and April 23, 2009. Both meetings will be in room 3340.
