Spring 2005 Camporee
Metro Lakes and Dan Patch District
Raceway Park in Shakopee, MN
May 20, 21, 22
Dear Scouts and Scouters,
Your Troop is invited to attend 2005 Spring Camporee. The Camporee dates are May 20-22. This year we will be doing a joint Camporee with both Dan Patch and Metro Lakes Districts. Estimated attendance should be around 600 Scouts and Scouters. At this event we will be celebrating all things automotive!
This registration packet should help you understand what is happening at the Camporee so you can publicize it to your Troop. Activities will include a auto show featuring race cars, street rods, muscle cars, dune buggies, monster trucks, mud trucks, motorcycles, and many, many more. There will also be many, many opportunities for Scouts to get greasy, oily and messy by, (among other things), changing the oil in a car, changing tires, change spark plugs, rebuild carburetors, do a brake job, check fluid levels, jump start a car, and many more things like that! We will have the Pit Crew Challenge, where Scouts pretend that they are on a Pit Crew and change the 4 tires out as fast as they can.
We will also be having THE “ONE LAST RUN” PINEWOOD DERBY RACE!! This is a chance for all Scouts to bring out their favorite Pinewood Derby car and race it one more time. All Scouts will get one chance to race, there will be no heats per se. We will record the fastest time for each race and those times will be compared to get the overall winner.
There will also be the chance to watch the race cars doing their warm up laps for Sunday’s big race. Scouts will be allowed in the grandstands for front row seats as the race cars do their laps.
There will also be other demonstrations and displays regarding careers in the automotive field and other things. We are actively searching for any and all things automotive to make sure that we can cover as many aspects of cars as we can. If you have a vehicle that you would like to show please feel free to contact me. Also if you would be willing to help teach Scouts a particular automotive skill, (such as changing the oil in a car), please contact me as well.
Feel free to call me, Ted McLaughlin, District Camporee Program Chair, at (612) 845-3062; or email at mclaught@, if you have any questions regarding any aspect of this event.
I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the Camporee!!!!

General Information
First Aid
First Aid will be available at the main headquarters area. However, each Troop should be able to take care of minor injuries. Injuries requiring medical attention should be reported to and attended by the staff at the HQ. Please have proper medical forms for each person. We will try to have trained medical personnel on staff for this Camporee.
Permission Slips
Every Scout should have a permission slip signed by their parents/guardians giving permission for any medical treatments, hospital visits, etc. These forms should be kept in the campsite and be readily accessible in the event of an emergency. We will not be doing rifle or archery this time so you will not need separate permissions slips for that this year.
Uniforms
Scouts should be in Class “A” uniforms upon arrival, at worship services, Flag Ceremonies, and during the campfire program. During the day on Saturday Scouts SHOULD NOT dress in Class “A” uniforms, they should dress in Troop tee-shirts if at all possible. Patrols should dress consistently. Everyone should be well aware that there will be A LOT of greasy, oily, messy things there that could STAIN CLOTHES!!
Fees
The cost for the Camporee this year is $12.00. This includes access to a race track, lots of cool displays, hands on equipment, a nifty patch, track fees, prizes, cracker-barrel, awards, and other assorted supplies and equipment. Not too bad for a great weekend.
GREASE WARNING!!!
Just a reminder about wearing Class A’s. All Scouts are going to be HIGHLY encouraged to not wear Class-A uniforms during the day. We want the Scouts to get as ‘hands on’ as possible with these pieces of automotive gear, and that will involve them getting messy. We will have plenty of the orange cleaner stuff, but (among other things) Scouts will be leaning up against cars from junk yards, changing the oil in cars, and more. Face it, Scouts WILL get greasy. They can change back into Class-A’s after dinner.
Camporee Policies
The following rules were made to help us have a successful and safe camping experience. It is the responsibility of the adults in charge to see that their Scouts know and understand these rules. Anyone caught violating them may be asked to leave the camp.

Scout behavior Scouts will be expected to follow the rules and regulations, and listen to leaders and staff. Anyone not heeding these instructions will be asked to leave the camporee. Remember that we are out in public for this event and we need to make the owner of Raceway Park want to have us back in the future.

All Scouts are encouraged to spend as much time as possible at the ‘hands on’ displays. Since Scouts don’t get many chances to do things like changing the oil in a car, doing a brake job, rebuilding a carburetor, jump starting a car, changing spark plugs, so they should definitely take advantage of this one! All events will be done in a safe manner by people who know what they are doing. We will be teaching them the ‘correct’ way to do things, (such as jump starting a car), unlike the way some people do them now.
