WORK HOURS - School of Medicine & Health Sciences
WORK HOURS
The UND surgical residency program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and follows all requirements of this accrediting body. This includes the recently implemented work hour requirements (see Other Information -- Section 4). This policy requires that residents do not work more than an average of 80 hours per week in any given four week period, are not on call more than every third day and do not work more than 30 hours consecutively, including call. The UND surgical residency program is structured to be in complete compliance with these requirements. Call schedules are also structured to be in compliance with these requirements.
In order to document compliance with these requirements, time cards will be maintained by all residents for all work hours. This is done through an internet-based program which all residents are required to complete on a weekly basis. A copy of the submission form for the internet-based program is enclosed. The guidelines for this are as follows:
The work week begins at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday morning and is completed at 12:00 midnight the following Saturday. The submission form for each week must be completed by 12:00 p.m. on the Monday after the preceding week. The Program Director will receive a report each Tuesday morning. Residents who have not completed their work hour submission form for the preceding week will have points deducted per Resident Point System and have operating privileges suspended until this form is completed. Repeated violations will result in further disciplinary actions. The submission form should be completed on a daily basis with the number of hours worked during each day. Each work event will be recorded separately. Regular work hours and call work hours are designated separately on the submission form. It is necessary for each resident to enter hours for all regular work hours, call work hours and time away at conferences. A submission form for vacation and travel time for moving must also be submitted, but hours entered should be recorded as 0. Residents are requested to print out a confirmation sheet for each entry and keep this in a file that they maintain themselves. It is necessary for the residents to put their name at the beginning of each recording session as well as the entire week in the appropriate field on the form. After each entry is confirmed, the program is designed to allow repeated entries without entering the name and week for each entry. Instruction in the use of the internet-based program and submission of work hours will be provided at orientation each year. Questions regarding submission of work hours can be directed to Lori Anderson.
