In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Assalamu Alaikum,

My name is Almas Mujahid and I will be your child’s second grade teacher for the 2017-2018 school year. I hope you have had a restful and enjoyable summer inshaAllah. I am very excited to begin the school year! Second grade is a very busy year, filled with lots of fun and learning! I am looking forward to working with you to ensure a successful school year for our students, inshaAllah.

A bit about me: This will be my fifth year at Islamic School of Irving. I spent most of my life in the northeast and moved to Texas in 2012. I am a Texas EC-6 certified teacher, this means that I am certified to teach core subjects (ELAR, Math, Science, Social Studies) for PK-6th grade. I will be teaching ELAR, Math, Science, Social Studies and Islamic Studies this school year inshaAllah.

Please take a few minutes to read through this informational packet. I have included several forms at the back of the packet, these will need to be completed and returned to me. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. With your cooperation and support, I know that we will have a great year inshaAllah!

Jazak Allahu Khairan,

Almas Mujahid

Meet Your Other Teachers:

Arabic & Quran:

My name is Nahil Hamam and I will be the Quran teacher for 2nd & 3rd grade students and the Arabic language teacher for 2nd grade students for the year 2017-2018 Insha’Allah. I have been serving my community for the last 18 years at the Islamic schools and 16 years in Jordan with the teaching of different subjects. I also helped in the Arabic language curriculum development at the public charter schools. I have a deep passion for learning and a commitment to remain up to date on new developments in the field and how it applies to our society and future. I aim to provide a stimulating learning environment that encourages my students to achieve their highest potential, founded on Islamic morals and also encourage them to become committed and balanced Muslims, knowledgeable scholars, contributing citizens, community builders and give them quality care and training in all aspects of life, Insha’Allah.

In case of an emergency, please contact the office to inform us if someone who is not listed will be picking up your child******

***FRIDAY TIMING Dismissal at 12:30. Late pick up fees apply after 12:45.

ATTENDANCE

Regular school attendance is very important. Valuable learning time is lost with each day’s absence and cannot be replaced easily. Many integral activities, including class discussions, group experiences, and instruction cannot be replicated with written work.

If you need to check your child out early for an appointment, you must go the office and get a pink slip. Please do not come directly to the classroom unless you have a pink slip.

If your child is absent, you must send a note explaining why he/she was absent. Excused and unexcused is based on the Student Handbook guidelines.

If a student is absent, I will collect any missed work in an “Absent Folder” to be completed upon return. As a general school policy, students have 3-5 school days after return to complete make-up work. No work will be accepted 5 days following an absence. Missed exams may be made up for valid absences (medical, family emergency---not vacations/trips).

KEEPING IN TOUCH [pic]

COMMUNICATION FOLDER- Please make sure your child has a 1” binder. This will be used as a communication folder. All complete and graded work and any communication will be placed inside of this folder. I also recommend buying a pencil pouch that can be placed into the rings of the binder so that any notes or money sent with the child can be stored in a secure place.

**Any money sent with students for bake sales or other events must be secured in a Ziploc bag with their name written clearly on the bag and placed in their folder.**

* If you would like to meet with one of child’s teachers, you may contact them directly via Renweb (best way to get in touch with teachers).

Class Dojo

You may send me text messages through the Class Dojo app. Please use discretion after school hours. I do have “Quiet Hours” between 7pm-6am, this means that I will not be checking and replying to messages during these hours.

Class Website

Please check the website regularly as I will be updating it with information about what is happening in our classroom. I update the Language Arts section of the website regularly with the current week’s vocabulary, writing focus, comprehension skills focus, and spelling lists.

HOMEWORK POLICY

I would like students to focus mainly on reading everyday so they should have a comfortable, calm space at home to enjoy reading. For the other areas of math and writing I will share options for exploration.

I do not assign any formal homework (worksheet packets, etc.). How will you know what your child is learning in the classroom if they do not have homework? I do my best to make sure that RenWeb lesson plans are updated regularly and I also send a printed weekly newsletter home (a soft copy will also be sent via Class Dojo) at the beginning of the week to keep parents updated on what objectives we are working on in the classroom. My intention for not giving homework is making sure there is enough time in our students' days for family time and activities and I want to balance that with time for reading and some real world math and writing practice.

If family time and extracurricular time prevents students from getting to these activities, I understand. We will be working hard every day in class and I think students should have time for other things in their lives too.

However, if your student decides not to use their time wisely in class, then completion of incomplete class work at home will be required and I will let you know.

A monthly reading log will be sent home with the students with the required dates for reading listed. Reading logs will be checked every Friday to make sure that students are keeping up with their reading. Recording on the reading log will not be required for weekends. I will give a grade for the reading log at month’s end. There will not be any other required work, so I will not accept any excuses for incomplete reading logs.

Basically, what I am saying is anything beyond the reading is optional, but I will acknowledge and support their practice and extra interests. There will be projects that will require some work at home throughout the year.

CLASS/HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS

All work is to be done neatly in pencil and must have the correct heading. Class/homework that is turned in without names will be graded, and then hung on my “This belongs to…” clip board. Students are responsible to check if their papers are on this board. Unclaimed work after one week will be recycled.

**There will be extra assignments and projects throughout the year. All of your child’s teachers will coordinate to ensure that too much is not given at one time.

The ISI grading scale is as follows:

All Subjects Grades 2-5 Weighted Categories

Categories All subjects Grades 1-5

Homework 10%

Classwork 20%

Participation 10%

Projects 20%
