April 18 Second Sunday of Easter

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 31, 2005

From the Desk of Father Cory

Pope Benedict XVI says that both body and soul can benefit from a relaxing, getaway vacation, especially one in the outdoors. As you know I always listen to my pope. Vacation time with family, friends, or even parishioners offers the opportunity to spend “more time dedicated to prayer, reading and meditation on the deep meaning of life.” Today’s hectic lifestyles leave little room for silence, reflection and being in touch with nature. It has become almost a necessity to be able to refresh one’s body and spirit with a relaxing vacation.

This is what nineteen of us did in Canada a week ago. We were eleven teenagers and eight adults. We drove for twelve hours before we arrived at the lake. From there we had another four hours of boating and portaging our equipment to arrive on the islands where we camped. I told our teenagers that I was old and needed someone to carry me. They did not go for it. However, they did work well together as a group.

Once we set up camp the fishing, exploring, and swimming began. Of course, we ate fish the first night and the second, hamburgers the third night and fish the last night. The teenagers and adults in our group liked fish so we ate fish in the morning for breakfast also.

There were a few comical situations. For instance: drinking water was obtained by dipping a bucket into the lake and then running the water through a filter and into one’s cup. One evening in the dark I dipped the bucket in the lake and two of us drank the water down. Two teenagers began filtering water after us. They had a flashlight with them. They asked me where I got the water, I told them out of the lake, and they told me there were seven minnows swimming around in the water – we laughed. They filled their cups and drank it.

A favorite event was water football. Every day we went across the lake to the other side of the lake where there was a beautiful sand shore. The rules were that in order for a person to be down the defender must dunk the other’s head below the water or at least stop their progress. I think a few of the kids took the opportunity to take a shot at the priest. I am not accusing anybody, but I have my suspicions.

The scenery was incredible, the fishing phenomenal, and the wild raspberries and blueberries were delicious. We had good talks around the fire and one night we got together for twenty minutes of night prayer around the fire in which the cross of Jesus was passed around. A meditation was given and the cross was passed to each person. Each person spent quiet time with our Lord. Saturday night was Mass. It felt like we were on the Sea of Galilee with Jesus.

The trip was challenging, rewarding, and breathtaking at any given time. Being in touch with nature helps put things back in perspective; one rediscovers oneself to be a small, but unique creature with a capacity for God.
