Minutes of the Meeting of June 1, 2005

Karen DeCamp, president of the York Road Partnership, opened the meeting at 7:28 p.m.

Introductions and Welcome

Old Business:

City Trash Can Pick Up

Dale Thompson 410-396-8618

Al Tucker Northeast Superintendent for Solid Waste 410-396-9950

Ms. Thompson and Mr. Tucker both addressed many concerns raised throughout the discussion

and invited members to contact them directly with further concerns

Leslie Wietscher reported concerns about consistency of trash can pick up

“Smart” cans on poles are being emptied well

Discussion of Woodbourne area cans

The cans have no liners because they were never properly installed

It was unknown originally who ordered the cans

Schedule for corner can pickup

Scheduled every night but often not enough crews to cover all routes

Typically emptied Mon, Thurs, and Sat by the night crew

Emptied by the day crew on scheduled trash pick up days

East side: Tues. and Fri

West side: Mon. and Thurs.

Corner cans are not for business or household use

Sanitation enforcement officers must clearly connect trash to property address to

issue a citation

DPW employees work on completing a specific task

Now they also clean area around can

Brooms and shovels on every truck to facilitate clean up

If abuse of trash disposal is connected to a specific business the following tools are available:

Zoning enforcement

Health Dept. can check to assure daily disposal for all food establishments

Can conduct random inspections

Sanitation Enforcement

Only involves what is visible from the street or sidewalk not inside establishments

Letters from community groups to property owners often helps enforcement efforts

Cc the Sanitation dept on any letters sent

Councilman Harris is willing to draft letters to problem properties and Cc

community groups

The Sanitation Dept. may remove some of the cans along York Road

Removing cans sometimes helps stop dumping

MTA Bus Route Changes / Belvedere Square Transit Committee Report

Theresa Furnari updated the YRP on the progress of the task force

Meeting scheduled June 6th at 6:30 in the Loyola Community Room

Informational meeting June 2nd at 7:00pm at Greater Homewood

Maps of the proposed changes to bus routes in our area were circulated by Bill Miller

A full size map of all the proposed changes was available for review

Karen DeCamp provided an update on information learned to date

Michael Deets—Deputy Director of the MTA stated by e-mail that there are no

proposed changes at Belvedere Square for the #44 bus

Save-A-Lot Site

Councilman Harris provided an update

Previously under impression that PriceRite would operate a grocery at the site

Now confirmed that Family Dollar is coming

BDC working to confirm that the lease is signed

Margolis Reality apparently negotiating with both PriceRite and Family Dollar

PriceRite wanted roof repairs to the building as condition of lease

Lease with Family Dollar at least five years with some option years

Councilman Harris is pushing for acquisition of the site

Meeting with Jay Brodie on June 2nd

Jason Canapp updated on the steps taken by YRP to date

Concerned that the community hasn’t been taken seriously

Greater need to prepare in advance for opportunities

BDC has taken limited initiative throughout the process

Suggested that YRP request monthly reports from BDC on activity in our area

Community desires something that will appeal to the entire corridor

NEW BUSINESS:

Awards to YRP Members from States Attorney’s Office

The following YRP members received community awards from the State’s Attorney’s Office:

Jason Canapp

Sedral West

Leslie Wietscher

Louise Harris

It was noted that Dunbar Denby has been in poor health and may benefit from help from fellow members

SNAP

Due to time constraints the break out groups have been postponed until the July meeting

Karen DeCamp encouraged members to consider what they want to accomplish short term

This will be discussed at the July meeting

Leadership Committee Appointed Positions

The following positions have been filled by the Leadership Committee:

Housing and Neighborhood Committee: Dan Ellis

Streetscape and Appearance Committee: Leslie Wietscher

Commercial Revitalization Committee: Jason Canapp

Public Safety Committee: To Be Determined

Corresponding Secretary: Natalie Fulco

Public Relations Coordinator: To Be Determined

The meeting was adjourned at 8:43 pm
