BARNES & NOBLE NOOK E-BOOKS HOW-TO GUIDE

The Queens Library offers access to E-books for the Barnes & Noble Nook in E-PUB and PDF formats, available to borrow for a lending period of 7-, 14-, or 21-DAYS. You must have BOTH: 1) a Queens Library card with a working PIN number, AND 2) Adobe Digital Editions installed on to your personal computer to borrow titles for the Nook. Your computer must be authorized with an Adobe ID and password. (Adobe Digital Editions is available as a FREE download from )

1. Log on to the Queens Library website: . Move your mouse over the Books menu and click on eBooks on the dropdown menu.

2. Click on link to the Overdrive website.

2. You can browse the available titles, or use the Quick Search or Advanced Search to search for the items you would like by Title, Author or Subject.

With the Advanced Search option, you can search by Title, and/or Author, and narrow the results by Language, Publisher, Subject, and Format (ie., Kindle Book, ePub, etc.)

You also have the option of filtering the results for “Only titles with copies currently available to be checked out”.

You may also browse by clicking on the subject headings in the left sidebar.

3. You will get a list of results based on your search criteria. Add/View Selection means that the book is currently available to check out. Place a Hold means that there are no available copies, but you may add your name to the Waiting List.

You may click on the Title of the item for more information on the available formats, as well as a brief description of the item.

4. Click Add/View Selection to Add your selection to your Digital Cart. Remember to click Add/View Selection associated with the format you would like. You may choose to Continue Browsing, or Proceed to Checkout.

5. If you have not logged in, you will be prompted to Log In with your Card Number and PIN Number.

6. You will get a Summary of the items you are checking out. You may choose between 7-Day, 14-Day or 21-Day Lending periods. Click Confirm Checkout to proceed.

7. Click Download. You must do this for EACH title. The files will be downloaded on to your computer.

8. Locate the file on your computer, and double-click to open it. The file will automatically open with Adobe Digital Editions, and you can read the ebook directly from your computer.

To transfer the ebook to your Nook:

1. Using the USB cable, connect your Nook to your computer while Adobe Digital Editions is open. Your device will appear as a bookshelf in the menu on the left.

2. Click and drag the title to copy it to your device.

HOW TO REQUEST AN EBOOK

Just as with regular books, the library owns a limited number of copies of ebooks. As a result, popular titles may not be readily available to check out. You have the option of placing requests for ebooks, as you would for regular books. You will be notified by email when the ebook is ready to be checked out and downloaded.

1. Locate the record of the item you would like to place a request on. The record will tell you the number of Available Copies, how many copies the library owns (Library copies), and the number of Patrons on the Waiting List. If you would like to place a request, click Place a hold next to the format you would like to check out.

2. If you have not logged in, you will be prompted to Sign In by entering your library card number and PIN number.

3. Verify or enter the email address you would like to be notified at when the book is ready to be checked out, and click Place a hold.

You will receive a confirmation message. An email will be sent when the selected title becomes available for checkout. Once you receive the email, you will have 3 days to check out the selected title.

In what format are public library ebooks for the Nook available?

Public library ebooks for Nook are available in .epub, and .pdf formats.

With EPUB, you may change the font size of your ebook, and the text automatically reflows within the display screen. EPUB is perfect for creating an instant large print ebook, or for reading on an ebook reader.

In PDF ebooks the text and graphics remain fixed. For larger print, you may zoom in on the text. PDF is ideal for ebooks with many images such as picture books and graphic novels.

Why is this book not available for the Nook from Queens Library?

Just as with physical books, copies of ebooks much be purchased. Therefore, availability of books will vary depending on what has been purchased.

Will I be notified before my public library book loan expires?

Yes. Three days before the end of the loan period, we will send a courtesy reminder e-mail about the loan expiration. Once the loan period has ended, an additional e-mail notification will be sent.

Can I renew my ebook?

No. If you would like to continue accessing the ebook after it has expired, you much check out the book again, if it is available, and download a new copy.

How do I view the status of my loan?

You can view the status of a public library book for your Nook through Adobe Digital Editions. Click on the Borrowed Bookshelf in the panel on the left-hand side.

You can also access all of the materials that you currently have checked out on your library's OverDrive-powered website (). After you log-in with your library card number and PIN number, click on My Digital Account for a list of the items you currently have checked out.

Do I have to own a Nook to borrow and read public library ebooks?

No. There are FREE Nook apps available to download from the Barnes & Noble website () for a variety of devices, including PC and Mac computers, iPad, iPhone, and Android devices. You can also read the ebook on the computer using Adobe Digital Editions.

Do I have to have a Barnes & Noble account to borrow public library ebooks?

No. All you need is your Queens Library card with a working PIN number, and an Adobe ID, all of which are available for free.
