ENVIRONMENTSPreparing your blueprint for your 3D modelAs you all know we are venturing into unexplored territory for Scarsdale High School, learning from home. In preparation of our next lesson, you will need to sketch out one scene of your environment so that you will be able to envision exactly what needs to be modeled in Cinema 4D.HYPERLINKS can be accessed by Control Clicking on the blue underlined links HOW & WHEN TO TURN IN:You all should have created, published, and shared your Google Site with me. Once your environment sketches are complete, please take a photograph of them with your phone or camera and upload to your Google Site to a new page titled “Environments”. You can then create a text box and begin to type up your environment description (see Step 3). Please have both completed and uploaded to your Google Sites by Wednesday, 3:00 pm. Materials:White drawing paper 9x12” (or whatever you have on hand – no line please)Pencils (to be used first)Colored pencilsVideo to watch before starting your sketch:Please watch this video on the basics of drawing, but you can jump to the part where he actually begins to draw around 5:20 (in the beginning of the video he talks about what drawing materials to use). Please watch this video of an Environment Concept Artist daily process by Trent KaniugaResources:This website has many examples of concept art based on various environments Concept Art Empire You can also use Pinterest to look for examples of concept art for environments that would be specific to your environment_____________________________________________________________________________________STEP 1: Developing the sketchThink of an environment that will best suite your character. If your character is an alien, then the environment should match the character. For example, your environment could take place on the surface of a planet or inside of a spaceship. Your character would look odd if placed in a modern office building.Once you have developed the idea for your environment you will need to sketch the environment with a pencil onto a full sheet of drawing paper (KEEP THE PAPER HORIZONTAL). Please fill in the entire picture plane, which means there should not be any part of the environment that I can’t see because it is too small, or you just didn’t feel like filling up the entire piece of paper. You should include in your environment all objects that are important to the story line. For example: if your alien is inside of a spaceship then there should be a cockpit with a chair for your character to sit in along with a console of many buttons that could possibly light up or glow.Your designs must be original! When using Pinterest keep in mind it is just for ideas; make the design your own. STEP 2: Applying colorYou will need to color in your environment but make sure you have erased any smudges or unwanted pencil marks before you add color. Neatness counts! As for what to use to color in your environments here are my suggestions in order of my preference, but of course due to these weird circumstances use whatever you have on hand (click on each one to view a tutorial on how to use the materials – don’t assume you know how to use these materials, I am looking for professional quality):Watercolor pencilsColored pastels/ pastel pencilsColored pencilsMarkers are a last resort unless you are really experienced with using them because they are unforgiving. Here’s a second tutorial video for markers because they are so hard to master!STEP 3: Description of environmentYou will need to type up a one-page description of your environment in a text box on your environment page in Google Sites. Please include the following:The location of your environmentWhy you chose to focus on this environmentWhat will the color palette look like especially if you were unable to achieve the desired colors with the art supplies you had at homeWhat will the lighting be like in the environment (daylight, nighttime, indoors, etc.)?Describe some of the textures you would like to use for your environmental modelEXAMPLES OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONCEPT ART:The examples I have included are just that, examples. I know without being able to teach you how to properly draw your concept art in person I can’t expect your sketches to be as realistic as the ones below. However, I do expect that you watch the videos I have included in the hyperlinks and learn from them. You can even look for more tutorials on your own before you begin to sketch. Just try to make your environments as realistic as possible and please fill the entire picture plane of the paper. ................
