Emergency Ultrasound College Curriculum Boston Medical Center, Department of Emergency Medicine Dean: Meera MuruganandanAssistant Dean: Megan LeoOther EUS faculty: Andreas Dewitz, Mark Byrne, Alice MurrayParticipants:Residents who seek to develop an expertise in point of care ultrasound.ObjectivesThe Emergency Ultrasound College has been created for residents who want to enrich their residency with a deep dive into the world of point of care ultrasound. The main objectives are:Become experts in point of care ultrasound. Learn image acquisition, image optimization, and interpretation for both core and advanced ultrasound applicationsBecome clinical educators in the field of emergency ultrasoundExplore the administrative and IT workings of the ultrasound divisionRequirementsElective (2 months)1st month will be dedicated to exploring more advanced ultrasound applications as well as dedicate time to the development of a scholarly project2nd month rotation can be a clinical EUS elective, global health US teaching elective, US research elective, US education elective. This will be considered on a case by case basis and will require prior planning and approvalScholarly project in Emergency ultrasoundExamples include: a traditional research project, QA/QI initiative, case report or curriculum/educational initiative. Projects may be in collaboration with other divisions (education, global health, etc)EducationTeach/Participate in Intern orientation ultrasound courseTeach/Participate in 1 Small group ultrasound sessionPrecept 1 scan shift with rotating medical studentsWork with ultrasound faculty to develop and deliver 1 dynamic ultrasound lectures in either a core or advance ultrasound topic. This may be delivered at resident conference, intern orientation, or other teaching sessions supported by the Ultrasound DivisionParticipate in Image Review/QA. As a senior you will take a lead during these session to teach medical student and junior residents.ScanComplete a total of 800 US scans over the course of your 4 years of residency. Competency will be assessed by OSCE given by EUS facultyAttend an administrative overview session conducted by US faculty. Topics covered will include credentialing, quality assurance, billing, hospital policy and national guidelines. Attend section meetings (quarterly, dates TBD)Ultrasound College Conference and Small Group Session: Must attend all College sessions (exceptions considered on a case by case basis)Conference Sessions:Session 1 (Aug 6) Session 2 (December 13)Session 3 (April 1)Topics ideas: invited lecturer, advanced ultrasound application, Ultrasound clinical cases in global health, Journal watch Small Group:Session 1 (October 15)Session 2 (April 8)Topic Ideas: Invited guest instructor (vascular/echo tech), advanced clinical applicationOther Optional Activities Participate in ultrasound related educational activities in the simulation center, medical school, nursing education or other departments (ICU, surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics)Attend regional and national ultrasound conferences/events:AIUM national conference – American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine is an interdisciplinary organization. The conference will allow you to explore the breath of ultrasound as it is integrated in all other divisions of medicine. ACEP Ultrasound Section meeting New England Emergency and Critical Care Ultrasound Course, EUS Management Pre-course Participate in advance ultrasound teaching sessions with echocardiography technician, vascular technician, cardiology, and anesthesia.
