621-025 Registered Nurse (RN)

▪ The three major educational paths to registered nursing are a bachelor’s degree, an associate degree, and a diploma from an approved nursing program.

▪ RN’s would have done clinical rotations at different facilities.

▪ Most RN’s have experience with inpatient or outpatient facilities.

▪ Direct Patient Care: involves creating a care plan with the physicians and nursing team- it is the RN’s job of executing on this care plan. This includes medication management, checking dosage, starting or stopping IV lines for fluid, assisting with treatments, reviewing charts regularly, consulting closely with the physicians, directing other staff such as MA, CNA to make sure clinic and hospital flow is efficient.

621-038 Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)/Vocational

▪ Job Description: Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), or Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs), care for people who are sick, injured, convalescent, or disabled under the direction of physicians and registered nurses.

▪ Often, they provide basic bedside care.

▪ Many LPNs measure and record patients’ vital signs such as height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration.

▪ They also prepare and give injections and enemas, monitor catheters, dress wounds, and give alcohol rubs and massages.

▪ To help keep patients comfortable, they assist with bathing, dressing, and personal hygiene, mobility, standing, and walking.

▪ They might also feed patients who need help eating.

▪ Experienced LPNs may supervise nursing assistants and aides.

▪ As part of their work, LPNs collect samples for testing, perform routine laboratory tests, and record food and fluid intake and output.

▪ They clean and monitor medical equipment.

▪ Sometimes, they help physicians and registered nurses perform tests and procedures.

▪ Some LPNs help to deliver, care for, and feed infants.

621-039 Medical Assistants (MA)

▪ Medical Assistants are the first person you see when going to your physician. They do the preliminary testing like taking your weight, vitals etc.

▪ Job duties include: rooming patients, taking vital signs, patient histories, EKG’s, blood draws or finger sticks, injections, lab testing(UA, Pregnancy, etc), prescription refills, suture removals, wound care, autoclave/sterilization, assisting physician with minor procedures.

▪ Medical Assistants can take a national exam to become “certified”, however, most facilities are looking for MA’s who can be “certified” with a Health Care Assistant Card. Health Care Assistant Card is a certification issued by the State of WA to do invasive procedures. MA’s must be working at a facility and a doctor or medical director on site must sponsor a MA to get this certification.

621-039 Medical Records (MedRecs)

▪ Usually work in an outpatient clinical setting, but can also be placed in a hospital.

▪ Candidate works in the medical records department of clinics: pulling files, filing them back away, filing loose sheets of paper, etc.

▪ Filing systems: Alphabetical, color coded, numerical, terminal digit.

▪ Candidates need to be able to alphabetize, have great attention to detail and be comfortable with physical work: bending, lifting and being on your feet all day.

621-039 Medical Transcriptionist

▪ Candidates are either trained on the job or have completed a Med. Transcription course.

▪ Candidates transcribe doctor’s notes – must have great typing skills and have excellent medical terminology knowledge.

621-040 Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA)

▪ Most work at long term care, assisted living facilities and hospitals.

▪ Main job requirements: bathing, dressing, feeding, handing out medications, and patient transport.

621-041 Cytotechnologist

▪ Microscopically examine and diagnose GYN/NG slides for infectious, pre-malignant, and malignant disease processes or abnormal conditions.

▪ Microscopically examines cellular samples from all human body sites for evidence of cancer, pre-cancer, atypia and microorganisms. Conduct Fine Needle Aspiration immediate interpretation and cytopreparation of collected specimens. Refers all reactive to abnormal gynecological and all non-gynecological cases to a qualified Pathologist for review and final sign-out. Maintain strong working relationships with pathologists and other healthcare professionals. Depending on the need, the candidate may also have familiarity in the following areas: Image guided screening and image analysis and knowledge of immunocytochemistry, FISH and PCR.

621-044 Ophthalmology Techs (COA)

▪ Must have graduated from an accredited Ophthalmology program or have training in the field, some Techs are MA’s with Ophthalmology training

▪ Duties include rooming, preliminary testing including refraction, field visual testing, color, depth, etc. Also assists physician with minor procedures.

621-044 Optical Techs

▪ Some candidates graduated from an Optical program, others are trained on the job.

▪ Duties include: Visual field testing, fitting frames, sales, specializing in contacts, etc.

621-046 Clinical Lab Scientist - Medical Technologist

▪ Perform technical procedures and analysis on biological specimens per physician request. 

▪ Testing experience in all (generalist) or one of the following areas (specialist): Chemistry, Microbiology, Hematology/Coagulation, Immunology/Histology, Serology, and Toxicology.

▪ Perform quality control and remedy basic problems with laboratory instrumentation.

▪ Perform essential paperwork and pass along results to physician or nurse

Perform in-house lab testing: i.e. automated or manual analysis, CBC, differentials, ESR, Platelet counts, coagulation tests, enzyme tests, blood cultures, gram stains, media plating, specimen            incubation, UA w/microscopic, Rapid Strep, Mono, KOH, Cream-o-Crit, Eosinophil Stain, UA Culture for screening, Allergy Testing, Neonatal Bilirubin, cell counts, crystal exams.

▪ Familiarity or prior experience with lab instrumentation, i.e. Olympus AU640, GCMS, STA Compact (Diagnostica Stago) analyzer.

621- 046 Clinical Research Coordinator

▪ Facilitate on several industry, NIH, and locally sponsored research studies, monitor and audit local research studies. Design and/or maintain MS Access and MS Excel databases for several of the local studies. Actively recruit, screen, enroll, interview, obtain informed consent, and counsel prospective study subjects

▪ Additionally, conduct data entry and analysis on data gathered over the course of the studies. Maintain accurate and precise documentation for all aspects of the studies and provide excellent patient care to patient’s that are involved in clinical research trials. Ensure FDA guidelines and Good Clinical Practice are being followed.

▪ Duties include: Obtaining and recording an accurate patient history, performing diagnostic procedures and obtaining diagnostic images, analyzing technical information using independent judgment in recognizing the need to extend the scope of the procedure according to the diagnostic findings, providing an oral or written summary of the technical findings to the physician for medical diagnosis, providing quality patient care, and collaborating with physicians and other members of the health care team.

621-051 Pharmacy Tech (Pharm Tech)

▪ Two different kinds of pharm techs – administrative and clinical.

▪ Administrative Pharm Techs usually work for pharmacies in Walgreens, RiteAid, Bartells, Safeway etc. Their job duties include taking prescriptions, checking insurance, billing the insurance company, contacting physicians to confirm prescriptions, and light compounding such as mouthwashes and lotions.

▪ Clinical Pharm Techs do IV mixings (mixing of the chemicals for IV packs). This can be doing chemo mixings, etc.

621-054 Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP)

▪ ARNP’s see their own patients just like a physician and can diagnose patients.
