Digital Photography Foundations

aCourse Summarya

This course will help students become well rounded in the fundamentals of digital photography. Six areas of instruction will be emphasized: history, how cameras work, how composition works, how lighting works, how to use photo editing software, and career opportunities.

aExpectationsa

Be in class.

Since demonstrations, lectures, assignment instructions, equipment availability, teacher assistance and peer collaboration all occur during class time; you need to BE IN CLASS EVERYDAY. If you are absent from class the overall quality of your work will suffer. You must plan ahead with instructor to arrange time outside of class to make up work. Tardy. Being tardy causes disruption of instruction and interrupts class concentration. The school tardy policy will be enforced (see handbook). Any tardy beyond 10 minutes will be considered an absence and will fall under the excused/unexcused absence policy in the handbook.

Do your best.

Maintain a positive attitude. Understand that your previous experience with graphic arts may be limited. Be careful not to have expectations too high at first. On the other hand promise yourself that you will approach every task with your best effort. Careless or shoddy work will not be acceptable! It is important to learn to make careful evaluations of work you like and work you don’t like. They may both contain positive and negative elements. After you have identified these you can begin to reproduce the positive elements and avoid the negative ones.

Be respectful.

This begins with respect for the people who worked before you, who work after you, and who work around you. We all have the desire to touch the things we are curious about or admire. It is this drive that we must stifle. Please do not touch other people’s work! We also seem to have a desire to leave our mark so that everyone knows “we were here.” In this environment the opposite must take place. If, after you have finished working, it can be detected that “someone was there” then you either didn’t get everything cleaned up or you didn’t get everything put away. Please leave no trace of your presence! For this to be a quality environment, we must work together. This means that you will not simply return things to where you found them but rather return them to where they belong. You will not simply clean up your own mess but rather clean up any mess around you. And finally, being respectful means being able to work successfully along side someone who is different than yourself or someone who has different fundamental beliefs than your own. With this level of respect everyone can experience success.

aGradinga

Work on projects is to be done in class unless other arrangements have been made. You will be graded on notes, several different projects, quizzes, tasks, and presentations throughout the semester. You will participate in critiques and presentations at the end of each major project. If a you fall behind, even it is from excused absences, it is your responsibility, not MR. Ds, to find out what information you will miss, or missed, and schedule time (before school or during CORE/CHOICE) in the digital darkroom. There is a final at the end of the semester, as well as quizzes throughout the semester. Students are encouraged to keep all completed projects.

Productivity/Citizenship.

You are expected to consistently work on Photography projects on a daily basis, clean up, and have a great attitude.

Due Dates and late Work.

Required Projects are due at of the end of the school day on the due date. If a project is not turned in on time, it will receive a 0 in the grade book (which could affect your core/choice status). I will accept/grade late work for full credit ONLY when you TYPE a letter to me (that your parents sign and include their email address and best daytime phone number) explaining why the project was late and what you are going to do different in the future to insure your projects are completed on time. You may resubmit any test, quiz or project for a better grade as long as it is completed no later than 2 weeks before the end of the semester. This is a hard deadline – no exceptions. Every resubmitted project or test will need to have a resubmit form attached to it. Your last project and ONLY your last project is due no later than One week before the end of the semester. This is also a hard deadline – You may not turn in multiple projects on this date. No work will be accepted after this date. Projects must be turned in EXACTLY according to the instructions on the assignment sheet or they will not be graded.

aClassroom Rulesa

The AMHS dress code is observed. All electronic devises are prohibited. Files and folders stored on computer hard drives or the server will be trashed if they are not properly labeled. Students must clean up at the end of class each day. Inappropriate artwork or plagiarism will result in confiscation with a failing grade on that project. Use of email, chat rooms, AIM, playing games, steaming video, or surfing the web, unless it is Photography related, will result in loss of computer privileges. Official hall pass (completed) must be used when leaving the classroom. Foul language or harassing behaviors will not be tolerated. No cheating – all work must be your original work unless special permission has been granted by the instructor. Cheating will result in a non-passing grade on that project. Unsafe behaviors will result in a student’s removal from the classroom. Students must work

on Photography work in class, not other class work, unless all Photography projects are completed.

aDrawersa

You will be provided with a drawer for storage of Photography supplies. A lock will need to be purchased from the cashier for $6.00. Students should not leave valuables, such as cameras, portable CD players, and CD's in their Photography drawers. We cannot accept responsibility for misplaced, lost, or damaged supplies and equipment, or personal belongings.

aStudent appearances in video and photography *a

We assume permission has been granted for your student to appear in photographs. These images may be used in district publications such as (but not limited to) newsletters, web pages, promotional pieces, highlight videos, competition pieces, etc. Also, please understand that your student will be allowed to shoot photographs during school hours without direct supervision with the expectation that they adhere to established guidelines for content and behavior.

aLab Fee and Additional Costsa

There is a $15 lab fee (lowest at AMHS!) for this class to cover expensive, expendable materials. Please pay the cashier by September 13 and bring me your receipt. Make checks payable to AMHS - VisCom. If you cannot pay the lab fee, see your counselor about accessing a special fund. Each student is encouraged to have a removable storage device (USB drive) at least 2GB (4GB would be better). These are available from a variety of stores for as little as $5.00.

There are no cameras to check out for off campus use.
