Piano Keyboarding Course Outline

COURSE DESCRIPTION

You will learn to read and play from a piano score. You will be working from a Beginner Adult Piano book and progressing through it by units. In addition to the required material, you may select other songs (or be assigned other literature) to learn, based on your skill level. You will encounter traditional piano music as well as learning how to apply piano skills to more modern songs using chords. Each day in class, half of your time will be spent at the keyboard, and half of your time will be spent at your seat, learning basic music theory.

OBJECTIVES

1. Perform a short song on the piano, using effective expression.

2. Perform a varied repertoire of music representing different genres and styles.

3. Perform scales using correct fingering.

4. Demonstrate understanding of standard rhythmic & melodic notation.

5. Demonstrate understanding and application of basic music theory.

GRADING

Daily Participation (Practice Skills) – 30%

If you are present, you will earn points based on your level of participation (4 points per day). If you are absent for any reason, you may choose to make up those daily participation points by working on the keyboards in the classroom for 20 minutes outside of normal class time. This must be pre-arranged with the instructor and can be done before or after school or during homeroom.

Tests and Quizzes (Music Theory knowledge & Application) – 30%

You will be asked to demonstrate your understanding of basic music theory with online modules, worksheets, quizzes, class projects/activities and tests. If you are absent on a test date, you have one week to make up the test. Late work will be accepted on most projects with a late point reduction.

Performances (Piano Proficiency) – 30%

You will perform for the instructor periodically (progress checks and scale checks). Your performance will be evaluated based on your mastery of the song which you have selected and what is appropriate for your skill level.

Semester Final (Theory Test & Recital Performance) – 10%

You will take a musical theory test that covers all of the major topics discussed and taught throughout the semester. You will also perform in a class piano recital. Students will be given plenty of time to work on their recital pieces in class, in addition to their other music they are learning. They are to show proper recital etiquette as both a performer and audience member.

Basic Grading Scale: A = 90-100 B = 80-89 C = 70-79 D = 60-69 F = 0-59

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

I expect ALL students to adhere to the following expectations:

1. Be respectful of the teacher and other students. (Actions, Words, Attitude)

2. Bring all required materials to class and come to class on time and prepared to learn.

3. Take individual responsibility for late work, absences, and requesting help if you do not understand something.

4. Complete all work that is assigned. (I will NOT accept work that is incomplete.)

5. Be willing to try and give your best!!!

DISCIPLINE

In most cases, normal discipline problems will be handled in the classroom, using conferences with students and parents, adjusted seating, alternative work, etc.. Major disciplinary problems will result in an office referral.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY POLICY

If a student is caught cheating on an assignment, they will receive a zero for that assignment.

SUPPLIES

Each student will receive an Adult Piano Book, scales and other material. They are responsible for returning the book in its original condition at the end of the semester. The student will be responsible for bringing the following materials daily to class:

- Assigned Piano Book & Other Assigned Piano Literature

- Assigned Theory Book

- A Folder (For returned papers, Homework, etc.)

- Assigned Scale Reference Sheets

- A Pencil

- Ear Buds/ Headphones/ Etc.

- A Book, Homework, etc. (for when you are not on keyboards and are finished with class work.)

FEES

There is a $5.00 instrument repair fee which is due 3 weeks from the first day of classes. This fee is only paid once per year for those students who take more than one semester. (This fee allows us to keep the piano tuned and make any repairs as needed.)

ASSIGNMENTS/PLAYING TESTS

A reminder that all assignments are due at the beginning of the next class period. Playing tests are planned according to an initial schedule available on Canvas towards the beginning of the semester. Students who are absent are still expected to adhere to the playing schedule.
