Course Description: This general focus of this course is to train the piano skills of the student in a systematic and classical approach. Students will learn music of a variety of styles. They will also learn basic theory, sight-reading, and research skills. There is not a prerequisite to this course. This course can count as ½ semester fine art credit or as 1 fine art credit, depending on the enrollment of the student.

Course Procedures: Students begin with a group lesson/bell ringer as they come into class. Students will then do individualized assignments based on ability. Schedule is made and altered as needed. Students will also perform for each other and appropriately critique each other.

Required Materials: Students will use a variety of materials provided by the instructor. Students are given special notebooks to keep them organized but need a pen/pencil for class. It is encouraged for students to have a set of personal earphones for the computer and keyboards. They may also want to bring an MP3 player or blank CD’s (or they can be purchased) to copy their music so they can practice at home.

Assessment Plan: Since there is limited homework, students are expected to keep an accurate notebook with the following sections: Sight-reading, piano songs, and projects. Student will also take quizzes and tests. Occasional projects are also given, and students will be given ample time to prepare for the projects. The grading policy of this class corresponds with the student handbook of MHS, including the tardy grade.

Extra Help: Tutoring is available by appointment.

Classroom Management: Proper procedure must be followed in order for a comfortable work environment to be established. As a result, the following rules need to be followed:

1. Follow all directions. These include verbal directions, those written in this handbook and those in the School handbook.

1. Be respectful. Be polite to directors, visitors, and other students. Be polite both to people and their possessions. This is especially important when being corrected by the instructor.

1. Do your best. Willingness is half the battle in music. Work hard and encourage others positively to do the same. This is especially true since this is an individualized assignment-driven class. When you are working in your station, it is assumed that you are working and do not require “hummingbird” supervision.

Consequences of inappropriate behavior: Consequences of inappropriate behavior are chosen among the following actions. Please note that this list is NOT comprehensive.

• Verbal Warning

• Teacher/student conference

Parent notification

School Administration conference

• In-School Suspension

SEVERE CLAUSE—sent directly to an administrator.
