Dear Class of 2021,

Congratulations on your graduation from the Tepper School of Business and Carnegie Mellon University! The Class of 2021 has been a very special one in many ways. First and foremost, you have experienced a once-in-a-century pandemic that has disrupted your academic experience as well as your lives. You are also the first class I will see graduate from the Tepper School as dean, and I want to take a moment to recognize all you have accomplished. I know how hard all of you have worked over the past several years, and you should take great pride in what you have achieved here. Our curriculum is rigorous, and we hold our students to the highest standards. You have all overcome so much to make it to your commencement. I am truly inspired by your resilience and work ethic.

I hope that as you celebrate your achievements with family and friends, you will also take the time to reflect on all that you have learned, the many people you have met, and the life-long relationships you have made here at the Tepper School. I want you to know you will always have a place in this community.

As you begin the next phase of your lives and careers, you have many reasons to be optimistic. You are graduating from one of the most demanding business schools in the world. The analytics and behavioral skills you acquired here will serve you well in an uncertain world where empathy and data driven decisions are becoming essential. Indeed, if the pandemic has taught us something, it is the importance of taking care of each other and of science and data-based decisions. I am convinced that more than ever, the rigorous Tepper School curriculum has prepared you to become the leaders of tomorrow.

I know this year has been far from normal. Even now, I know your graduation might not be what you envisioned, but I want you to know how truly impressed I am with the Class of 2021. You have navigated transitions and quickly made the changes required of you to ensure your success here. There is no challenge ahead of you that you will not be able to overcome. I truly believe this.

On behalf of all of us here at the Tepper School, it has been our honor to have you as our students, and we are proud of each and every one of you. I extend my best wishes for success in all you do. We know you will make a difference in the world and hope you will remain connected to your alma mater. You are one of us, now and forever.

Once again, congratulations on a job well done!
