Jesus Heals the 10 Lepers - Bible Lessons 4 Kidz

Jesus Heals the Ten Lepers

Main Point: I need to be thankful for God’s work in my life.

Key Verse: Luke 17:16 When one of them saw that he was healed, he came back. He praised God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him.

Read this from the Bible as you show these verses on PowerPoint:

Luke 17:11-19

Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. He traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men met him. They had a skin disease. They were standing close by. And they called out in a loud voice, "Jesus! Master! Have pity on us!"

Jesus asked, "Weren't all ten healed? Where are the other nine? Didn't anyone else return and give praise to God except this outsider?"

Then Jesus said to him, "Get up and go. Your faith has healed you."

Say This: In all of our lives, bad things happen to us. True, there are consequences for bad choices, but sometimes bad things happen simply because we live in a fallen world. The Bible says that the men had a skin disease called leprosy. It doesn’t say that they deserved leprosy but just that they HAD leprosy – a by product of living in a sinful, fallen world.

Power Point: Show a tropical paradise.

Say This: When God created the world, it was perfect. There was no sickness; there was no death. Everything was beautiful, happy, and good.

Power Point: Show a natural disaster.

Say This: When sin came into the world, it spoiled everything! There are accidents and cancer and divorce. There are tornadoes, tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, crime and sickness. It is not hard to see how awful sin is!

Because we live in a fallen, sinful world, there are terrible diseases. The disease of leprosy that these 10 men had is one of them.

Power Point: Show a picture of a person with leprosy.

Say This: Leprosy is a terrible skin disease where a person’s skin begins to rot and fall off. It is very painful and smelly. You could tell if a person had leprosy because their body would be filled with sores.

Leprosy was a common skin disease a long time ago, but there are still people today in parts of the world who have leprosy. There are people with leprosy in India, China, and Japan as well as in parts of Africa and the West Indies and in South America.

Leprosy is also a very contagious skin disease. It is very easy to “catch” leprosy. Even just touching a person who had leprosy or touching something that they touched could make you have the disease. So whenever a person got leprosy, they had to live outside the community.

Power Point: Show this verse

Leviticus 13:46 As long as he has the infection (of leprosy) he remains unclean. He must live alone; he must live outside the camp.

Like many other diseases, leprosy was very bad for a person’s body, but it was also terrible for them because they had to move away from their family, friends, and community. They had to live alone or with other people who were infected. That’s why these 10 men were together. They all had leprosy, and they were not allowed to be a part of their original family community. In some parts of the world, there are “camps” for people with leprosy.

Leprosy made a person “unclean”. Because leprosy was so contagious, people who had leprosy had to say “Unclean, unclean” as they walked around. No one wanted to be near a person with leprosy. The religious leaders of that day also thought that they were spiritually unclean. They could not go to the Temple like everyone else could.

That’s why these men stood at a distance from Jesus and called out to Him. These 10 lepers knew that they could not go near anyone.

They had probably been waiting for Jesus at the edge of the village. When they saw Jesus crossing the border between Galilee and Samaria, they yelled, "Jesus, Master, have mercy upon us."

The fact that these men asked Jesus for help shows us that they believed Jesus could indeed help them. It’s also interesting to note that they called Him, “Master”. This shows us that they knew that Jesus could heal them.

Jesus told them to show themselves to the priest. This is also very interesting. Why didn’t Jesus just heal them on the spot?

According to Old Testament law, going to the priest was what a person did after they were healed from leprosy or any other disease.

But these men were not yet healed! The fact that these ten men went to the priest anyway shows us that they believed that they would be healed on the way there. So at some point, as they were walking to show themselves to the priest, they noticed that their leprosy was gone. They had been healed!

Luke 17:15-16 When one of them saw that he was healed, he came back. He praised God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked Him. The man was a Samaritan.

Say: Isn’t that a beautiful picture of how we all should be? Jesus has done so much for us. We should praise God with a loud voice; we should bow down and worship Jesus with a heart FILLED to overflowing with thanksgiving.

When Jesus saw the Samaritan, He immediately wondered about the other nine men who had also been healed.

Power Point: Show this verse

Luke 17:17-19 Jesus asked, "Weren't all ten healed? Where are the other nine? Didn't anyone else return and give praise to God except this outsider?"

Then Jesus said to him, "Get up and go. Your faith has healed you."

Say This: It is hard to believe that while Jesus healed 10 men only one came back to thank Him. Certainly, the other 9 men noticed that they were healed, but they did not take the time to go back to say, “Thanks”.

It’s very likely that once they saw they were healed and went to the priest, they ran home to their families and friends. After all, they had been away from them for some time. Can you just imagine how excited they were? Can you imagine how happy their families must have been to see them again?

Though these 9 other men were ecstatic to be healed, they didn’t come to Jesus to publicly GIVE THANKS to God. They may even have been grateful in their hearts, but they didn’t “praise God with a loud voice and throw themselves at His feet”.

Faith hinges on the fact that forgiveness of sins comes only when we individually receive the gift God has given to us. No one else can accept God’s forgiveness for your sin. Just because the gift was given doesn’t mean that the gift was received. That is an individual decision.

When Jesus asked, “Where are the other 9?” He clearly was asking, “Why aren’t they giving thanks?”

The same question could be asked of us today. “Why aren’t these people giving Me thanks?”

The message from God is clear: we should have a heart filled to overflowing with thanksgiving to God, AND we should also tell God and others how thankful we are! God has done so much for us!

Say This: When Jesus gave His life for us, His blood made a way for us to be healed from a disease much more hideous than leprosy.

Do you remember when we talked about how sin spoils everything? Sin spoils us too! Sin ruins us.

We seem to recognize physical needs better than spiritual needs. When we’re hungry, we eat. When we’re sick, we rest. When we’re tired, we sleep.

But there are spiritual needs (sins) like hate, deep anger, bitterness, greed, selfishness and other spiritual illnesses that we need to call out to Jesus Christ for spiritual healing. Jesus wants us to call out to Him for help at all times. And like the one leper who returned, we should also worship, praise, and thank God at all times. We can do this when we’re alone, but God also wants us to give thanks to Him together with other believers.

Power Point: Show these verses.

Psalm 100

1 Shout to the Lord with joy, everyone on earth.

2 Worship the Lord with gladness.

Come to him with songs of joy.

3 I want you to realize that the Lord is God.

He made us, and we belong to Him.

   We are His people.

We are the sheep belonging to His flock.

4 Give thanks as you enter the gates of His temple.

Give praise as you enter its courtyards.

Give thanks to Him and praise His name.

5 The Lord is good. His faithful love continues forever.

It will last for all time to come.

Power Point: Show a picture again of Jesus on the cross.

Say This: Jesus made a way for us to be healed from the terrible penalty of sin by the atoning blood of Jesus.

Power Point: Isaiah 53:5-6 But He was pierced because we had sinned.

He was crushed because we had done what was evil.

He was punished to make us whole again.

      His wounds have healed us.

All of us are like sheep. We have wandered away from God.

All of us have turned to our own way.

And the Lord has placed on his servant

the sins of all of us.

Say This: Jesus was publicly crucified for us. We should find the time to publicly thank Him for it. And not just on Thanksgiving.

Power Point: Show this verse Colossians 2:6-7   You received Christ Jesus as Lord. So keep on living in him. Have your roots in him. Build yourselves up in him. Grow strong in what you believe, just as you were taught. Be more thankful than ever before.

Say This: You have been cleansed. How long will you continue to be like the nine?

Main Point: I need to be thankful for God’s work in my life.
