Mr. Burnette

Welcome to Geometry; I am excited to have the opportunity to work with everyone in the class. Listed below is a description of this class and how it will be conducted. Following these guidelines will ensure your success in this course.

Course Description: Topics covered include the language of geometry (points, lines, planes, and angles), reasoning, parallel and perpendicular lines, congruent triangles and their applications, quadrilaterals, similarity, right triangles and trigonometry, circles, polygons and area, surface area and volume, coordinate geometry, and transformations.

This description is a short list of all fancy words and fun we will have this year. We could sum this description up by saying that we will be investigating patterns in lines, angles, and shapes.

Classroom Rules

1. Students will put forth their best effort.

2. Students will show respect for everyone.

3. Students will come to class on time and prepared.

4. Students will follow directions the first time they are given.

5. Students will pay attention in class and take notes.

My rules are simple and could be summed up by rule number one. I want your best effort! Your best effort not only includes trying your best on a problem, but it also means coming to class, paying attention, working extra problems, and asking math related questions.

Homework Policy: The student will be given 4-5 homework assignments every week. These assignments are important to his or her success in the course. A detention will be given to the student upon his or her fourth missed assignment. The student will continue to receive detentions for every missed assignment beyond the third. This tally is refreshed at the end of the nine weeks. See Mr. Burnette with any questions.

Homework Help:

I am available from 3:45-4:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays in room 2002E for tutoring. Let me know if you are planning to receive help.

Where does my grade come from?

Grade make up

-Quizzes 40% (approximately)

-Tests 30% (approximately)

-Homework 10%

-Class participation, warm ups, other assignments 20%

Quiz grades- There will be approximately nine quiz grades every nine weeks. Quizzes make up the largest portion of your quarterly grade. Use quiz opportunities to show what you have learned on small chunks of information. Doing well will give you a solid grade on which other assessments can build.

Test grades- Don’t be fooled by the quizzes being worth 40%. Tests make up 30% of your grade and are still very important. They show that you have retained all that information from the quizzes. Approximately two to four tests will be given each nine weeks.

Homework- A long time favorite for every student, homework, makes up 10% of your grade. While that may not seem like much, its impact reaches far beyond the 10% credit it is given. Doing your homework will increase your quizzes, tests, and notebook check grades. Homework grades will be counted as an accuracy grade. Not doing your homework results in detention. Homework—it’s a big deal!

Class Participation and Warm ups - Have you ever fallen a few points short of the next letter grade up? Don’t let that happen again; participate in class. Studies have shown that paying attention, taking notes, and asking questions will improve all other graded assignments. Class assignments and notes will be randomly collected and graded. Warm ups will be given at the beginning of each class. Correct mistakes in class and keep these in your notebook for warm up quizzes. Class participation and warm ups will make up 20 % of your final grade.

I look forward to a successful year with each of you. I want you to know that I will give you my best effort. If you ever need additional help, let me know and I will make the time for assistance.
