JEWEL D. McASHAN

Jewel Delores Davis -McAshan was born in Arkansas. A child of the A. M. E. parsonage, she also grew up in Missouri and Oklahoma. From the time she was a small child, she has had a love for music and a strong desire to play the piano. As a child, just the sight of a piano would get her very excited.

Sis. McAshan began taking music lessons at the age of 11. She later attended the Lois Sokolosky’s School of Music. At the age of 13, she began playing for the Baptist church in her hometown of Wilburton, Oklahoma.

Sis. McAshan graduated from high school at the age 16, and went on to attend Shorter College in North Little Rock, Arkansas. For the two years she attended Shorter, she accompanied her college choir. Later she obtained her B.A. from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont, where she majored in Music and minored in Business Administration.

During an A. M. E. District meeting held at Shorter College, North Little Rock, Arkansas, Jewel met Rev. Eugene E. McAshan and they were married after a brief courtship. On September 2, 2006, they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. This year they celebrate 54 years of marriage. They are the parents of 3 daughters, 1 son and they have 11 grandchildren (one deceased).

Sis. McAshan has worked with the YMCA as a Y-Teen Instructor, the Bell Telephone Co. and in the public school systems. But most of her work experience was a full time Organist and Music Director in the Music Departments of the churches her husband pastored. For most of her adult life, Sis. McAshan has played for church choirs. She served as Minister of Music for People’s Institutional AME Church for the majority of her 13 years there where she played for as many as 5 choirs at one time. For 11 years she served as Minister of Music at Bethel AME, Copiague, New York until Rev. McAshan’s recent retirement.

Sis. McAshan is a past President of the AME Minister’s Wives and Widows Alliance of NY, a member of the Philadelphia Conference MSWAWO, a member of CONN-MSWAWO (Connectional Ministers’ Spouses, Widows and Widowers Organization) of the A.M.E. Church, and a member of the International Association of Ministers’ Wives and Ministers’ Widows, Inc. where she serves as organist.

Sis. McAshan served as YPD (Young People’s Division) Director for 6 ½ years (1959- 1965) in the Oklahoma Conference. Upon coming to the First District, for a short time she served as PME Chair for her Area in the Philadelphia Conference. She served as YPD Director for 9 years (1971 – 1980) in the New York Conference Branch. She was the Local President of the Missionary Society of Bethel AME Church, Buffalo, NY, for 8 years. She served on the Executive Board in the Philadelphia and New York Conference. She served as Editor of the “PCB Herald” (the Philadelphia Conference Newsletter) and is Editor of “The Reflector,” (the First District Newsletter). For 7 years, Sis. McAshan served as First Vice President of the First Episcopal District WMS. On May 22, 2007, she was appointed by Bishop Richard F. Norris President of the First Episcopal District WMS. She became a Life Member of the Women’s Missionary Society in May of 2004.

Sis. McAshan’s life has been a service unto the Lord. Her mantra is “JOY.” She marvels at the excitement and inner joy that she feels deep within her heart and spirit. Only God can give this kind of joy. It is this joy from which she draws her courage, strength and determination. Nehemiah 8:10 expresses it best – “The Joy of the Lord is Your Strength.”
