Biology Course Syllabus

(Keep this handout in your binder)

Course Description:

Welcome! Biology is a college preparatory course where students will develop an understanding of key concepts that help them make sense of life science. The ideas are building upon students’ science understanding of disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts from earlier grades.

The five life science topics in this course are:

1) Structure and Function

2) Inheritance and Variation of Traits

3) Matter and Energy in Organisms and Ecosystems

4) Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems

5) Natural Selection and Evolution.

Grading Policy:

It is expected that you will complete all assignments and tests with an overall average of 70 percent or more to receive credit for this course.

Grades will be assessed in the following manner:

Lab Activities and Projects 35%

Tests and Quizzes 30%

Final Exam 15%

Homework, Classwork, and Participation 20%

Extra Credit no more than 5%

➢ Grades will be updated on Infinite Campus. It is your responsibility to check that your grades are up-to-date and correct each week. PARENTS: PLEASE CHECK YOUR CHILD’S GRADES ONLINE WEEKLY SINCE NO PRINTOUTS OTHER THAN THE MID-SEMESTER AND FINAL GRADE REPORTS WILL BE SENT HOME (UNLESS REQUESTED).

Overall grades will be assessed as follows:

A = 90-100%

B = 80 - 89%

C = 70 - 79%

F = below 70% (no credit)

Textbook:

➢ Biology – The Dynamics of Life published by Glencoe (blue cover with whales)

*You are required to check out the textbook or CD-ROM from the library and keep it at home.

General Information:

• Keep an organized notebook or binder containing all daily assignments in chronological order for the entire semester. Do not throw any papers away! You will need them to study for the final exam and as proof of grades earned on assignments.

• Check my website for assignments and upcoming due dates. Some assignments, notes, or handouts may be posted there for you to print out.

• All assignments are due on time! Late work will not be accepted unless authorized by me.

• Absences: It is your responsibility to get the assignments and notes upon return, turn in any work due during your absence, and make up any missed assignments immediately! Makeup work for each day is posted on my website. To access the assigned makeup work, click on the day of absence and the makeup work will be displayed. Other options include sending me an email (tradojcic@tvusd.K12.ca.us) or leaving a note in my inbox in class. Be sure to include full name, period number and date of absence(s). For each day of absence, you will have the same number of days to make up any classwork, homework, labs, tests, and quizzes. Labs, tests, and quizzes must be made up during CAT30 (unless there are special circumstances).

• If you need extra help, don’t hesitate to ask! Individual tutoring is available during CAT30. Just ask for me to make out a pass.

• Extra credit may be given on occasion.

Classroom Behavioral Expectations:

1. School rules will be enforced at all times

2. No food, beverages, gum. Water is OK unless we are doing a lab

3. Electronics: Phones will need to be used on occasion and are to be used as directed. No electronics of any kind are allowed during tests and quizzes. Their use at these times will result in a grade of a zero for the test.

4. Be on time, prepared, and ready to work. When the tardy bell rings, you should be sitting in your assigned seat.

5. Be nice: No more needs to be said.

6. Follow all guidelines in the Student Safety Contract. Safety is a major concern, especially during lab activities. This syllabus and the Student Safety Contract are designed to cover all aspects of laboratory safety so please read both carefully before signing. Inappropriate or disruptive behavior will result in a verbal warning, detention, parent contact or other consequences. Such behavior will also lower your citizenship grade.

7. Do your own work!!! Academic integrity and honesty is a school-wide objective and is expected of everyone. Therefore, no credit will be given for cheating, work that is copied, or for work that is loaned to another student to be copied.
