Catalog Course Description

In this course you will develop an understanding of the basic principles of behavior and mental processes. The subject matter and research methods of scientific psychology will be presented. Topics include: history, biopsychology, sensation and perception, states of consciousness, learning, memory, forgetting, language, cognition, life-span development, gender, sexuality, stress, health, motivation, emotions, social psychology, abnormality, treatment and social and diversity issues.

Tentative Assignments

More information for each of these assignments will be provided when they are assigned.

In-Class Activities (5 points each): There will be in-class activities during most classes.

Goal: To apply course material to mini-examples.

Chapter quizzes (10 points each): A 5- or 10-question quiz over most class session’s chapter(s). The textbook, notes, handouts, and talking/texting are not allowed (closed-note test).

Goal: To ensure that students are reading and understanding information in the chapters.

Vocabulary quizzes (10 points each): Matching tests for vocabulary terms will be completed for many chapters. This quiz is closed-note.

Goal: To ensure that students understand the terms used in psychology.

Chapter outlines (10 points each): For each exam, outline one chapter. These cannot be revised.

Goal: To practice summarizing and finding key points in readings.

Application Problems (10 points): For each course topic, you will apply course information to solve real-life issues.

Goal: To apply course material to real-life issues.

Short papers (25 points each): These papers will a summary and integration of the topics on each exam. 3-page maximum.

Goal: Exam review and integrate the information with other information.

Open-Book Exams (50 points each): The exams will include multiple choice, short answer, and long answer essay questions. Exams will not merely test factual knowledge, but will require that you use/apply the material to answer the questions. You will not need a ScanTron sheet. The textbook, notes, and handouts are allowed. Talking and texting is not allowed.

Goal: To show what you know!

Extra Credit: There will be a variety of extra credit opportunities through the semester, including:

• Participating in designated research studies.

• Completing more than one chapter outline before each exam (of a chapter included in that exam).

• Completing a comprehensive Vocabulary Exam at the end of the term. Each correct definition will earn a ½ point of extra credit.

• Notify me if you know of a relevant activity.

Goal: The goal of offering extra credit opportunities is for you to learn more about psychology and the process of research.

Grading

Grades. Your grade will be the number of points that you collect on your assignments (including extra credit) out of the total number of points offered in class (excluding extra credit).

Attendance. You will not be graded on attendance, but you cannot make-up in-class assignments if you were gone on the day that they were completed (unless you make prior arrangements).

Late work. All assignments will be accepted until (and including) the day of the exam for that chapter. However, as you can revise and re-submit most assignments you are costing yourself valuable time and revision attempts. Exams and quizzes must be completed on the scheduled day unless you contact me prior to the exam.
