Why have my bookmarks disappeared from firefox

It's one of the most frustrating moments imaginable: Your bookmarks are gone. The good news is that if Firefox has lost your bookmarks, you should be able to recover them. This article will show you how to recover your bookmark toolbar in Firefox when you think all is lost. We'll also cover what to do if your bookmark toolbar appears but you're still missing bookmarks. If you're ready for a more dependable bookmark manager for Firefox, try Workona. It securely saves your docs, links, and files, so you never have to worry about losing work.Jump to:What to do if the bookmarks toolbar is not showing up (how to show the bookmark toolbar)The most common way of losing bookmarks within Firefox is when the bookmarks toolbar is gone. Usually this means the bookmarks toolbar was accidentally turned off. To turn it back on, click Views > Toolbars > Bookmarks Toolbar. This should bring up your bookmarks toolbar, with all of your bookmarks there as you remember them.If your bookmark toolbar appears but you're still missing bookmarks, keep reading. What to do if none of your bookmarks are showing upFirefox automatically saves and backs up your recent bookmarks (up to 15 backups). You can restore them by clicking Bookmarks > Show all bookmarks.Within the library window, click the Import/export icon > Restore. You can then select the backup that you want to restore, either from an automatic backup or from a manual backup that you upload. Warning -- restoring bookmarks from a backup overwrites any current bookmarks with the ones in the backup file. If you'd rather start over with a more reliable bookmark manager, Workona is a free option. What to do if some of your bookmarks and folders aren't showing upYou may encounter an issue with Firefox where you can't find all of your bookmarks and folders. One option is to create a button that takes you to all of your bookmarks. Simply click the Library icon > Bookmarks > Bookmarking Tools > Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar. An icon will show up right next to the Library button, where all of your bookmarks and folders are now accessible. What to do if your imported bookmarks from another browser aren't showing upIf you've recently lost your bookmarks after importing them from another browser, it's likely they're hiding in a specific folder. To find them, click the Library icon > Bookmarks > Show all Bookmarks. At this point, you may see a uniquely named folder (that refers to your former browser) in the bookmark list, which will house your bookmarks. It's important to note that Firefox keeps any hierarchical structures intact from your last browser.Did we miss a step for restoring your Firefox bookmarks toolbar? Let us know. If your bookmarks have suddenly disappeared, don't worry - you should be able to recover them. This article explains how to get back your bookmarks if they disappeared unexpectedly. Your bookmarks are associated with the Firefox profile you are using. There may be instances when you or Firefox creates a new profile containing the default set of bookmarks (for example, if you make a separate installation of Firefox or when you downgrade Firefox). A new profile may give you the impression that you have lost your bookmarks. Determine if Firefox has created a new profile To see if another profile exists, type about:profiles into the Firefox address bar and press the EnterReturn key. This will open the About Profiles page, which will list at least one profile and could list many. The profile that Firefox is currently using will show: This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted. If you have another profile listed, you can launch that profile in a new Firefox browser window to see if it contains your lost bookmarks. See Recover user data missing after Firefox update for more information. If you were using the Bookmarks Toolbar for quick access to your favorite bookmarks and the toolbar is now missing, you may have turned off the option to display the Bookmarks Toolbar. To turn it back on: Right-click on an empty section of the navigation bar and select in the pop-up menu. On the menu bar, click , select , and then select . For more information, see the Bookmarks Toolbar - Display your favorite websites at the top of the Firefox window article. Follow these steps to add a Bookmarks Menu toolbar button that shows all of your bookmarks and folders: Click the Library button on the toolbar, then click . Click . Click . A Bookmarks Menu toolbar button will appear on the toolbar next to the Library button. Firefox automatically backs up your bookmarks and saves up to 15 backups in the profile bookmarkbackups folder. To recover bookmarks that were previously saved in the Bookmarks menu or on the Bookmarks toolbar but are now missing, you can restore them from one of these backups: Click the Library button on your toolbar. (If you don't see it there, click the menu button then click .) Click and then click the Show All BookmarksManage Bookmarks bar at the bottom. In the Library window, click the Import and Backup button and then select . Select the backup you want to restore from the list of dated automatic backups. You can also select to restore bookmarks from a manual backup, if you created one. After confirming your choice, the bookmarks from the backup you selected will be restored. For more information, see Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer. There is an "Old Firefox Data" folder on my desktop In some cases, Firefox may create a folder on your desktop called "Old Firefox Data". This folder contains a complete backup of your Firefox profile and can be used to restore bookmarks and other missing information. If you have this folder on your desktop, see Recovering important data from an old profile. If you have restarted Firefox after installing an add-on and your bookmarks are gone, it's possible that Firefox did not close properly before restarting itself. To recover your bookmarks, restart your computer. If you imported your bookmarks from another browser, you can find them inside a specially-named folder, for example, From Google Chrome or From Microsoft Edge depending on the browser, in one of these locations: At the end of the Firefox Bookmarks Toolbar. At the bottom of the Bookmarks list accessible from the Bookmarks Menu toolbar button. In the Bookmarks Library. To open the Bookmarks Library window: Click the Library button on your toolbar. (If you don't see it there, click the menu button then click .) Click and then click the Show All BookmarksManage Bookmarks bar at the bottom. That's definitely not supposed to happen. Let's track them down. Pre-Recovery Suggestions First, if you haven't already since this problem started, please shut down Windows (normally) and restart to complete any pending updates and release file locks. Second, was this the only change you noticed in Firefox, or do you notice settings/data restored to defaults, such as losing pinned Top Sites on the built-in home page, or having different toolbars displayed? If there were many changes, can you spot an Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop? Next, be on the lookout for the error message mentioned in the title of the following article. If you see that, we need to stop and fix it first: Fix "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional" error message. Recovering Bookmarks Step 1: Are the desired bars visible? If you are missing your Bookmarks Toolbar or top Menu Bar, try using the Toolbars list to turn those back on. Either: right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank spot on the tab bar (or right-click the "+" button) (menu bar) View > ToolbarsOn Windows, tap the Alt key to activate the menu bar temporarily. in Customize mode > Toolbars button (see: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars) To turn on the Bookmarks Toolbar or Menu Bar, or other bars, click it on the list. If the Bookmarks Toolbar does not appear, let me know, as there may be a special procedure for that. Step 2: Is the Bookmarks Toolbar empty? If there is absolutely nothing on the Bookmarks Toolbar, not even the basic bookmarks that come with a new Firefox, try using the "Restore Defaults" button at the bottom of the Customize screen: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars. Any improvement? Step 3: Are bookmarks listed in the Library window? You can call that up using Ctrl+Shift+b or "Show All Bookmarks". By default, Firefox shows the contents of the "Other Bookmarks" category. Do you see anything? To check the Bookmarks Menu or Bookmarks Toolbar, click that category in the left column, and look for the contents in the right column. Anything? If your bookmarks are not listed: try the Restore feature. See: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer. If no backups are listed on the Restore menu: did you find a folder named Old Firefox Data on your Windows desktop that you could try restoring from? Any progress so far? Hi jmazzeo, since you are using a new version of Firefox, do you want to start a new question? Meanwhile, if you haven't already, could you close out of Firefox and do a normal MacOS shutdown and restart to complete any pending updates and release any file locks. If Firefox again starts up without your data, could you check whether your stuff is available in a different profile, as follows: Profile Manager Page Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it. If you go back to the about:profiles page, you could look at the contents of the other profile folder to see whether it could be useful. On the "Root" folder link, click the Show in Finder button. You might see the contents of that folder, or you might get an icon selected that you need to double-click to open that folder.
