A series of reading assignments, lectures, discussions, and media presentations make up the course material. You are expected to read the assigned material before class and bring in any questions or items for discussion. Following that discussion, we will explore areas in class that are beyond the readings.Required TextsGeorge Rodman, Mass Media in a Changing World, 2011 4th edition(New York: McGraw-Hill, 2011). Weekly Readings via class blogDiana Hacker. A Writer’s Reference. Newest edition. New York: Bedford/St. Martins. This is a required text for all TV/Radio classes, so please retain it.The Web site for the book can be found at rodman4eRequired SitesPlease subscribe to the class (and book) blog at: All the information will be posted on this site. Check frequently, just in case! All TVR Majors should join the department listserv by sending a blank message to bctvr-majors-subscribe@. This listserv will send around information about scholarships, internships, guest speakers, events, and other items of interest to Television and Radio majors.Outcomes AssessmentYour comprehension of reading assignments will be evaluated through three exams. Your synthesis of this material with our other class activities will be measured through the instructor’s evaluation of your class participation and your blog. Assignments & Academic IntegritySee other sheet for details on assignment.Academic Integrity: The faculty and administration of Brooklyn College support an environment free from cheating and plagiarism. Each student is responsible for being aware of what constitutes cheating and plagiarism and for avoiding both. The complete text of the CUNY Academic Integrity Policy and the Brooklyn College procedure for implementing that policy can be found at this site: . If a faculty member suspects a violation of academic integrity and, upon investigation, confirms that violation, or if the student admits the violation, the faculty member MUST report the violation.ExamsThe exams in this course are objective and computer-graded, based on your comprehension of the text. There will be two-one hour exams in class and one final exam, each exam getting progressively more difficult. Test questions deal with very specific text material. All grades are curved at the end of the semester. Make-up tests are available for documented emergencies, but they are more difficult than the originals, and we don’t review for them, so they are not recommended if at all avoidable. Sample tests are available in the reserve room of the library and on the Web site (rodman4e). Also, I hate giving quizzes but it’s up to you if I give them. If I believe you’re not doing the required weekly reading, I will give a quiz to ensure you are doing the work.Extra CreditYou can earn up to 3 extra credit points by taking a field trip to see a taping of a television program, such as The Daily Show or Sam Bee or Last Week Tonight or Colbert, and submitting a brief reaction paper along with proof of attendance, such as a ticket stub or souvenir. You could also go to the Museum of Television and Radio or the Museum of the Moving Image, which is also fun! Extra Credit – TV shows (full seasons, 3 points), going to movies or watching films are 1 point. All extra credits have to be earned with the right amount of length and effort. Other opportunities for extra credit will be announced in class throughout the semester. All ECs are due by week 13—no later unless given specific permission. If you are absent more than 3 times, you will not be allowed to do extra credit.Attendance, Lateness & Cell Phone PolicyB.C. attendance policy states that students are expected to attend all scheduled sessions of every class. The professor will try to consider emergencies, when they are documented, but the basic rule is that because class attendance is part of your grade, absences make the grade grow smaller. Also, lateness, eventually I will start to get angry, don’t be late. Be Kind, Be On Time.Use of Electronics: Computers: I recently read an article that using a computer in class zaps ALL the information so no point, so hence, no computers! Please refrain from the using cell phones, including and especially texting during the class. Using a cell phone is rude and distracting and I will catch you. Class is 2 hours and 40 minutes--- but I give you a break. I think you can survive without checking your phone. **RULE ON CELL PHONES**Caught using you cell phone once= WarningSecond Violation= Last WarningThird Warning= Points off class-work or points off exam.Fourth & Fifth Warning = Absence for day of class or MORE points off exam.Last Warning = Will consider failing for the class.
