UHC Sexual Assault Response Information

Nurse Practitioners Colleen Jones and Jolene Siemsen have completed the SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) training. All of the medical staff are licensed and qualified to care for individuals who have experienced sexual assault. The entire medical staff has met with Renee Desautel (Dean of Students office). During this discussion the medical staff learned about support services available on campus and discussed coordination of care.

Several of the nurse practitioners on staff are particularly experienced (and in fact recognized on campus as resources) in working with and supporting survivors of sexual assault. They are qualified, skilled, and experienced in conducting a physical exam to assess injury or signs of infection, in providing treatment to prevent infection and unplanned pregnancy, in providing emotional support and referrals for ongoing counseling and support needs, and in recommending and providing for follow up care and ongoing testing.

The UHC has very clearly spelled out guidelines that are posted to Sharepoint. The guidelines specify things like prophylaxis for possible exposure to infection, information about pregnancy prevention, and recommended immunizations (for protection from tetanus, hepatitis B). There is a link to the HIV Post Exposure hotline, which provides access to physicians who provide excellent information and guidance regarding treatment to prevent HIV.

> These guidelines are based on current CDC recommendations and include information from the Oregon Sexual Assault Task Force.
