Dear parents/caregivers of Whyalla Secondary College year 7 students,

Dear parents/caregivers of Whyalla Secondary College year 7 students,

The year 7 teaching community would like to welcome you and your child to Whyalla Secondary College. This year is a historic year for all of us. We are particularly excited in the way we are delivering curriculum subjects. The core curriculum is divided into 2 main areas, Global Perspectives (English and HASS) and Universal Reasoning (Maths and Science). Structuring our subjects in this way allows us to create lessons that build a deep understanding of content.

Year 7 is such an enjoyable year with so many exciting learning opportunities for your child. We will follow the school values throughout each lesson and ensure our classroom environment is always respectful, for all students. There will be high expectations for all regarding both behaviour and work output.

We have had a great start to the year and feel that it is important to introduce ourselves. If you need to contact us for any reason, please feel free to email your child's care group teacher, the year 7 Coordinator Anthony Wilkinson or Peter Usher, the year 7/8 Assistant Principal. Alternatively you can phone the school on 8668 9600.

As we get closer to the middle of term 1, we have confirmed enrolment numbers and the decision has been made to consolidate our year 7/8 community from 9 to 8 classes. All students and parents have been notified of the changes and we will provide support as students transition into their new classes.

Peter Usher (Year 7/8 Assistant Principal)

Peter.Usher749@schools.sa.edu.au

Welcome, my name is Pete Usher and I have the privilege of being the Assistant Principal of the year 7/8 community. Over the past 14 years I have worked as an educator across primary and secondary year levels both as a teacher and a leader. At the college we value the positive relationships with both students and families/carers, as you are integral to the success of your child throughout their college journey.

Stepping away from the college, my world is my son and I treasure the time we spend together. I am a sports fanatic and love watching all sporting events on TV. I am particularly passionate about footy, and I enjoy the exciting challenge of coaching North Whyalla. I look forward to meeting you all throughout the year.

Anthony Wilkinson (Year 7 Coordinator)

Anthony.Wilkinson779@schools.sa.edu.au

Hello, my name is Anthony Wilkinson and I am the year 7 coordinator. I'm a Whyalla local and have a passion for languages and linguistics. I have been teaching for 5 years and started my career at Long Street Primary School. I'm excited to be the leader of the year 7 community to help transition a traditionally primary year level into a new high school setting. Outside of school I enjoy learning about other cultures and languages, reading up on family history and most of all spending time with my wife and my son Luca.

Hi, my name is Brianna and I'm the care group and Universal Reasoning teacher for 7A. This is my first year of living in Whyalla, but I'm an Eyre Peninsula girl, born and raised in Cowell. I've recently returned from 2 years living and working as a teacher in West London. I love Science and Maths because I am passionate about understanding the world around me. Some of my other interests include travelling, yoga and spending time with my golden retriever Lacey and a fiesty old cat, Mittens.

Year 7B - Sabrina Stallon-Gibbs Sabrina.StallonGibbs43@schools.sa.edu.au

My name is Sabrina Stallon-Gibbs. I am excited to be teaching year 7 at Whyalla Secondary College this year. For the past 3 years I was a teacher at Whyalla High School. Year 7 C - Jeremy Head Jeremy.Head580@schools.sa.edu.au

Hi, my name is Jeremy Head and I'm in my second year of teaching, having been a year 6/7 teacher in 2021. I have worked within education for the majority of my career. It was all the experiences that I had during this work that led me to becoming a teacher as an adult. I love seeing young people work towards and reach their full potential. Outside of school I love spending time with my kelpie pup Ranger. I also enjoy riding my motor bike and spending time with my family although they will say the bike and pup come first. I'm excited to be part of the Whyalla Secondary College team and be involved in a significant part of Whyalla's education history.

My wife is also a teacher and both our young boys have settled into the country life. I'm an approachable person so please come and introduce yourself and ask me about any relevant school questions or queries before 8.40am or up to 4.30pm each school day. Conversely, we could always set up a meeting time. Take care and I look forward to meeting you all.

Hello families and friends, my name is Scott Penn and I teach Global Perspectives within the Year 7 community. 2022 is my first year teaching in a high school after 6 years working as a primary school teacher. I already know some of the students in the year 7 cohort and look forward to getting to know them all. Art and gardening are my current passions. I'm currently teaching myself to paint portraits with acrylics and enjoy the challenge of lino cutting (let's hope I keep all my fingers intact!). My garden is starting to take off after planting about 40 natives. So far, I've only lost a couple. I'm looking forward to teaching in our brand new, high-tech college and I'm very proud of the great opportunity this gives to the youth of Whyalla.
