Last year NPR’s All Things Considered presented an audio history that was bone chilling. It was one of those driveway moments when I couldn’t get out of the car until it was over. The series of shorts broadcasts catalogued the life of Nelson Mandela and related it to the freedom movement to bring an end to apartheid in South Africa.

MANDELA: AN AUDIO HISTORY

THE UNDERGROUND MOVEMENT (1960-1964)

A five-part radio series documenting the struggle against apartheid thorough rare sound recordings, the voice of Nelson Mandela himself, as well as those who fought with him, and against him.

-A recording of the 1964 trial that resulted in Mandela’s life sentence

-A visit between Mandela and his family secretly recorded by a prison guard

-Marching songs of guerilla soldiers

-Government propaganda films

Pirate radio broadcasts from the African National Congress

-Interviews with former ANC activists, National Party politicians, army generals, Robben Island prisoners and ordinary witnesses to history.

Each segments, lasting about 15 minutes, is preceded by a series of photos and a link to a timeline so you can tell where you are going. Another link to ‘People’ directs you to brief biographies of those individuals interviewed for the project.

-Write an essay comparing Nelson Mandela with either Mahatma Gandhi or Nehru.
