1850-1870 Hendricks County mortality schedules

Index to 1850, 1860 and 1870 Mortality Schedules for

Hendricks County, Indiana

Indexed by Meredith Thompson, 2013

Avon, Indiana

AUTHOR'S NOTES: Mortality schedules were taken at the time of the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 federal censuses. When recording the information about each household for the census, the enumerator was also to ask about anyone in the household who had died between 1 June and 31 May of the year prior to the census. This information was to be written on a separate record, called the mortality schedule. Because Indiana did not require deaths to be recorded until 1882, the mortality schedules can provide information on some pre-1882 deaths.

The 1850 mortality schedule recorded information on deaths that had occurred between 1 June 1849 and 31 May 1850. There were columns for: name, age, sex, race, free or slave, married or widowed, birthplace, month of death, occupation, cause of death and number of days ill.

The 1860 mortality schedule recorded information on deaths that had occurred between 1 June 1859 and 31 May 1860. There were columns for: name, age, sex, race, free or slave, married or widowed, birthplace, month of death, occupation, cause of death and number of days ill.

The 1870 mortality schedule recorded information on deaths that had occurred between 1 June 1869 and 31 May 1870. There were columns for: name, age, sex, race, married or widowed, birthplace, father foreign-born, mother foreign-born, month of death, occupation and cause of death.

This index does not cover all of the columns of information that were included on Hendricks County's 1850, 1860 and 1870 mortality schedules--you should always consult the actual record.

The Indiana State Archives was given the originals of the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 mortality schedules for Indiana; microfilm copies are available at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis and the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, as well as locally at the Plainfield Public Library. This microfilm can also be ordered through FamilySearch, for viewing at any Family History Center or Family History Affiliate Library.
