Important information relating to all aspects of school operation and Broward School Board policies and requirements are provided.All faculty members are required to read this handbook and implement the outlined procedures to ensure the smooth operation of school business. The Computer and Network Responsibility Agreements can be found in the Elementary Code of Student Conduct and online. Students and parents must sign it before any usage begins. Students who violate this policy will lose the privilege of utilizing school technology for a specified time. Additional procedures are required for use of the wireless carts. Laptops are numbered and issued by grade for the year. Carts must be kept locked at all times when class/teacher are out of the room. Student use of the internet must be supervised by the teacher to ensure students are utilizing this resource safely. Teachers using the wireless carts must be trained by the TLC.Acceptable use standards for employees require that equipment be used for work purposes only, not personal business. Any work done for profit using school system resources belongs to SBBC.ABSENCES AND ATTENDANCE – TEACHERThere are three major reasons for being absent: illness, personal and/or professional reasons. Each teacher is provided with ten (10) days of sick leave per year. Six (6) of these days may be used for personal reasons. When the need arises for a teacher to be absent, for illness or personal reasons, you are expected to contact Smart Find Express (Sub-Coordinator-at school emergencies only). (Support personnel should notify the Office Manager by 7:00 a.m.) Unless absence is for an extended period, the office should be notified by 1:00 p.m. each day to confirm plans for the following day. The phone number is 754-321-0050 or via the web . If you have any problem registering, call the help desk at 754-321-2340. (Appendix A–Smart Find Express Instructions)ACCIDENTS: STUDENTSWhen a student is injured on school grounds, the teacher or adult in charge must immediately advise the office of the injury and refer the child for proper and appropriate treatment. Do not try to move a seriously injured student; call for assistance. The staff member supervising the student must complete an Accident/Incident Report indicating the nature and circumstances of the accident the same day as the accident. Parent contact will be the responsibility of the person witnessing the accident.It is critical that students be closely supervised at all times, especially on the playground and in other less structured situations where accidents are more likely to occur.Students may not participate in any contact sports no touching or tackling.Administration will make the determination whether or not to call 911.Reminder: Students are not to be sent to the clinic alone. The “Buddy System” is to be utilized each time a student travels to the clinic. A Clinic Pass is to be completed.Buddy System = 2 students always togetherBuddy System = 3 students if one of the children is being “dropped off” (e.g. clinic) ADVERTISING MATERIALSSchool Board Policy #6300 states, “Schools may not be used as agencies for the distribution of advertising materials which are not associated with curriculum related programs. Materials from outside of school sources should not be distributed to home through students without the approval of the Superintendent or his designee.” This includes materials of a political nature. ANIMALS/PETS IN THE CLASSROOMAs a rule, animals/pets may not be kept in the classroom. The potential liability incurred when pets bite children is of great concern. There may be an exception, however, when the animal/pet is used as part of a unit of study. Individual cases dealing with units of study should be discussed with administration.ASSEMBLIESPrior to each assembly, please discuss appropriate assembly behavior with students. It is the responsibility of each teacher to see that the students in his/her class conduct themselves appropriately. Clapping is the proper way of expressing appreciation. Please remind students that shouting, whistling and stomping is not appropriate and reflects negatively on their class and the school. Special area teachers are requested to relieve classroom teachers during the scheduled specials times. ATTENDANCE/TARDINESS It is the responsibility of instructional personnel to keep accurate attendance records for classroom use and for transmission to the front office. Attendance inputted into PINNACLE is the only accepted attendance unless there is a Sub in the class. Attendance must be taken daily and should be completed by 8:30 a.m. (exception 8 a.m. specials attendance to be completed by 8:45 a.m.)Students - Encouraging regular attendance is the responsibility of school personnel. Students are to provide the teacher with a note from the parent when returning to class. Every effort should be made to investigate unexplained absences. In an effort to promote good attendance, a letter is sent home to parents by the teacher after a student has been absent (excused or unexcused) five days in 1 marking period or ten days in 2 marking periods. There are extenuating circumstances that will not warrant a letter being sent such as death in the family, serious illness, etc. Since Eagle Point takes part in the Broward Truancy Intervention Program (BTIP), parents of students with three unexcused absences will be contacted to verify absence. State Attorney’s office will send a letter home following the third unexcused absence. After five cumulative unexcused absences have been recorded, the State Attorney’s Office sends a letter home to the parents setting up a time that they must meet with the school administration. If a student has ten unexcused absences, a letter is sent to the parents and a meeting must take place with the Principal/Designee, Area Designee and a representative from the State Attorney’s Office in court. TARDINESS (under revision)Prompt arrival at school is expected of all students. Late arrivals disrupt class and causes loss of instructional time. Students arriving after the second bell must report to the front office for a tardy/late pass. When a pattern of unexcused tardiness becomes evident, the following steps will be initiated: (Tardy Letters in mailroom)5 tardies: A notification letter will be sent home (first quarter only). 10 tardies: A letter will be sent home indicating that if the tardiness continues, a referral will be made to the social worker.15 tardies: A letter is sent home notifying parents of a meeting with the teacher and the Principal (first quarter only). During Quarters 2 - 4, letters are sent after 20 tardies. BUDGET GUIDELINES PURCHASING THROUGH COUNTY AND STATE AGENTS:County imposed procedures require that all materials, supplies and equipment must be requisitioned through the office. See your team leader if you are in need of supplies. PROFESSIONAL TRAVEL:Temporary duty shall be defined as the employee performing his/her duties in a different location other than the regular assignment. A TDA is required for all in-county and out-of-county workshops, conferences, conventions, staff development, meetings, etc. Local staff development does not begin until 9:00 a.m. This is to ensure that a substitute is in place. If there is no substitute, county guidelines state that the teacher must return to school. A completed TDA form, along with a flier or description of the event, must be provided to the principal for approval and processing 10 school days before the event. Principal approval must be granted before attending any event. Do not assume that approval has been given to attend a workshop just because you completed a TDA. **If a staff member volunteers as a parent to go on a field trip personal days are to be utilized. A TDA should not be submitted. Travel vouchers are to be completed upon return from professional meetings for expenses incurred. Save all receipts and turn in as proof of attendance to these meetings. A Trip Report must also be completed summarizing daily events of your trip. FIELD TRIPS:Online Payments should be established for all Field Trips. SAN Form needs to be completed and forwarded to the Principal for approval and processing. Other money collections please see the Office Manager to sign out a Collection Envelope. It is to be submitted to the bookkeeper/office manager. Admission price and transportation fees are to be paid by school check. ALL MONIES COLLECTED - Board Policy #6301:All monies collected or disbursed by school personnel or by students within a school, in connection with the school program for the benefit of that school, a class, club, department, employee or student shall be recorded in the schools internal funds and shall be administered and accounted for in accordance with existing laws, Florida State Board of Education Administrative Rules and Board Policies. Monies collected from students shall be processed according to County Audit Procedures as follows:?Teachers are to count and receipt monies collected and submit to the Bookkeeper/Office Manager (daily) ?Students may not transport money ?Envelopes will be signed IN and OUT through the bookkeeper?Original permission slips must be turned in to assistant principal Always confer with the bookkeeper/office manager for the correct procedures to follow with regard to money. ORDERING PAPERBACK BOOKS FROM BOOK CLUBSAny collection from students by teachers for the purpose of ordering paperback books from any "teacher selected" Book Club must be approved. Please obtain the appropriate request form and submit it to the Principal for approval.Teachers are not permitted to issue personal checks for the amount collected from students at any time. These orders will be processed through the school Internal Account and sent with a School Purchase Order signed by the Principal. This procedure enables us to comply with School Board Policy. BULLETIN BOARDS1. Bulletin boards should be attractively decorated immediately so as to reflect the instructional setting of the class (certainly no later than one week after the first day of school).2. At least one classroom bulletin board should be designated to display students’ work. This bulletin board will serve as an incentive to students and as a means of rewarding achievement. All students' work should have the name clearly visible on the front of the selection.3. In accordance with the 1999 Edition of the State Requirements for Educational Facilities, child-prepared art work and teaching materials shall be permitted to be attached directly to the walls in accordance with the following: shall not exceed 20% of the WALL area in a building that is not protected throughout by an approved automatic fire sprinkler system.shall not exceed 50% of the WALL area (classroom) in a building that is protected throughout by an approved automatic fire sprinkler system.***ExceptionIf - Flame Retardant Paper meeting the requirements of NFPA701 is used; Then – The area of coverage can be doubled from 20% to 40% in a building that is not protected throughout by an approved automatic fire sprinkler system. (package labels must be kept to show Fire Inspector)In no case should artwork and teaching materials be placed over or near exits. This includes doors, exit passages and stairs. The ceiling is not a wall and artwork should not be placed or hung from the ceiling. Doors must be easily identified.Artwork and teaching materials must be confined to permitted bulletin boards and display cases in the hallways. Not on doors, interior or exterior.? CAFETERIAThe cafeteria is an extension of the classroom environment. Teachers should observe the following guidelines:Seat your students the first week of school.Each day, prior to entering the cafeteria, review rules, procedures, manners, good proper etiquette and noise level. Please have students use the restroom prior to coming to the cafeteria. Students will be allowed to use the restroom, emergency (only). Please be on time at the beginning and end of scheduled lunch period. Walk students into the cafeteria and seat them at assigned table. Toys and other distracting items are not allowed in the cafeteria. Choose three helpers per week to clean tables and monitor area cleanliness.Expected behavior in the cafeteria is as follows:Enter and exit the cafeteria walking quietly.Enter and exit the cafeteria on time.Stay in line while waiting to enter the food service area.Maintain a steady line movement without being told.Behave appropriately while going through the food service line.Go directly to designated table and sit down.Use a quiet, inside voice. Eat using good table manners.Raise hand when assistance is needed.Remain in seat during the entire lunch period.Leave the area clean. Remove trays, lunch bags and all other debris from the tables, and check seats and floor for trash. Teachers will be informed if a student(s) has misbehaved in the cafeteria. Teachers will be responsible for reinforcing appropriate behaviors and providing consequences for not following the rules.Consequences for misbehavior in the cafeteria are as follows: ? Verbal warning? Change seat at the same table? Change seat to a different table? Parent notification (Teachers will contact parent)? CALENDARSYearly Calendar - The assistant principal maintains the calendar and listing of all school activities. Before scheduling any event, an Activity Request Form must be completed and submitted to the assistant principal for approval. Once the event has been approved, it will be posted on the calendar and an email will be sent to the Originator. Events should be submitted well in advance of the desired date in order to avoid conflicts.Monthly Calendar – The calendar is placed on CAB. It is the responsibility of all personnel to keep up with deadlines and calendar events. Each month, a student who displays the monthly habit is selected from each class. An assembly is held for students and parents. Students receive incentives during the program to encourage them to continue displaying leadership qualities.Teachers are requested to take advantage of teachable moments, TEACH and review leadership qualities.CHILD ABUSE REPORTINGSchool Board Policy 6 GxG-5.3 upholds Florida Statute 415.504 making Mandatory the reporting of child abuse and/or neglect. “Any teacher or other school employee who knows or has reasonable cause to suspect that a child has been subject to abuse/neglect shall immediately report such knowledge or suspicion to the Department of Children and Families (formerly HRS) at the statewide toll-free hotline: 1-800-96ABUSE.” The person who has the most firsthand knowledge of the situation should make the report. All new and veteran teachers of Broward County must review the Child Abuse Brainshark, take test and submit certificate to the Guidance Counselor, annualy.Description of HarmABUSE: Non-accidental infliction of physical or psychological injury or sexual abuse by a parent, adult household member, or other person responsible for care of the child.NEGLECT: Failure/Omission by a caretaker to provide the care, supervision, services, or protection necessary to maintain physical and mental health.THREATENED HARM: A situation, circumstance or behavior, which leads a prudent person to have reasonable cause to suspect abuse or neglect has occurred or may occur in the immediate future if no intervention is provided.Confidentiality/ImmunityYou must identify yourself to the Hotline staff. Your name shall be entered into the record but shall be held confidential. Immunity from liability is provided for persons or institutions reporting in good faith.Penalty for Not ReportingThere is a legal penalty for failure to report. “Any person required by law to report known or suspected child abuse or neglect, who knowingly and willfully fails to do so, or who knowingly and willfully prevents another person from doing so is guilty of a misdemeanor of the second degree.SCHOOL GUIDELINESIf you are suspicious of a potential child abuse problem or if a child confides in you, you may contact the Guidance Counselor who serves as the Child Abuse Designee. The Guidance Counselor is available to assist with proper procedures. As a courtesy, the administration should be informed.***Do not interview the child or investigate the situation.The child abuse reporting form must be completed within 48 hours. Pony the completed form in a sealed envelope marked “Confidential” to the district Child Abuse Coordinator at K.C. Wright. No copies are to remain at school. ***Keep a note of the date, time and name of the Hotline staff member who took your report.CHILDREN OF STAFF MEMBERSStaff members wishing to enroll their children at Eagle Point must complete a reassignment request if the school is not the home school. Upon approval from the Reassignment Office, children may be registered. All staff members with children attending Eagle Point Elementary are responsible for supervising their children before and after school. Staff members’ children should not be given free access to the school. No student is allowed into teacher work areas to use the soda/snack machines. All rules and regulations that apply to the student body are applicable, including waiting in line with their class before the start of school. In the morning, prior to 7:30 a.m. to ensure office flow and professionalism staff children should sit and wait on the office sofas or the benches in the bricked courtyard (Time Square).Supervision for children of staff members on Early Release Days is the responsibility of the staff member.The District and Area Offices have reminded us that children of staff members are not allowed on campus on Planning Days. Additionally, if you would like to see your child perform at school, anything longer than 15 minutes will require obtaining a substitute. CLASSROOM MANAGEMENTTeachers are responsible for creating a positive learning climate and maintaining control and discipline. Discipline must be maintained throughout the school day in classrooms, hallways, the cafeteria and assemblies. Classroom rules and consequences positively stated and developed by the students will be established. Clear discipline standards that are firmly, fairly and consistently enforced will lead the class to positive feelings and high academic success.Each class will develop class rules the first day of school (First day priority). If a student is too ill to remain in school, the office will contact the parent so that the child may go home or to a designated place. A completed clinic pass must be sent with any ill student. Only children who are genuinely ill are to be allowed to come to the clinic where they may be permitted to lie down while waiting for someone to pick them up. A child whose parents cannot pick him/her up and doesn't have a fever will be sent back to class.No medication, including cough drops for students, may be kept in the classroom. An administrator or designee in the front office upon written consent from the student’s parent and physician on a medical authorization form may only dispense MITTEES (Faculty)Sound communication assists immeasurably in lubricating the machinery of a well-functioning school. COMMUNICABLE /CONTAGIOUS DISEASESNo one may attend school with a contagious disease. This includes, but is not limited to: eczema, Florida sores, ringworm, chicken pox, head lice, scabies, and conjunctivitis (pink eye).Any student or staff member suspected of having a contagious disease is to go to the office immediately. Many of these diseases spread rapidly and are not recognized by parents. Teachers are not to diagnose such disease, but must report all suspected cases immediately. Diagnosis is to be done by the appropriate medical personnel. Persons who have been absent due to a contagious disease may not return to school without clearance from the appropriate medical personnel and the school office. If a student enters your classroom, he/she is to be sent to the office immediately and not readmitted without approval from the office. This includes children diagnosed with having lice. They MUST get clearance from the office before they re-enter the classroom.Teachers should attempt to recognize symptoms of skin disease or other communicable diseases. Book Copyrights: Remember that reproduction of copyright material without prior written approval of the author or publishing company is a violation of copyright laws and can be extremely costly to the person in violation.?CUMULATIVE FOLDERSCumulative folders are the responsibility of the classroom teacher and must be maintained in compliance with School Board Rules and Policies. School Board Policy #5100 states, “All material in each Florida cumulative guidance record shall be treated as confidential and shall be directly accessible only to the professional staff of the school system…” These are documents that if subpoenaed, would provide information in court concerning the child’s academic progress, educational history and attendance.Each teacher must have a cumulative folder for each student enrolled in his/her classroom. At the end of the year, team leaders will be responsible for reviewing all cumulative records for their grade level. They will check to make sure all records are in order and complete.When removing a CUM folder from the file cabinets in the CUM room, place an OUT FILE GUIDE in place of the CUM, listing your name, the student’s name and the date. Remove the file guide when replacing the CUM in the file cabinet. In order to maintain the confidentiality and security of the student files, all cumulative records are to be kept in the locked CUM room during non-school hours. When a child withdraws from Eagle Point, the updated and completed CUM folder and any other records are to be provided to the office within three days of notification of withdrawal. If a student is transferring to a school within the district, the student’s grades are to be printed on a copy of the report card. This copy is to be clipped to the original report card and placed in front of the CUM folder. If a student is transferring out of the district, all information is to be completed in ink. Once these procedures have been completed, please submit the CUM folder to the guidance counselor. Articulation cards are to remain at Eagle Point.Students and parents are NOT permitted to handle CUM folders. CURRICULUM - OUR PURPOSEStandards of Service, as set forth by the Broward County School Board should be incorporated into teacher plans (School Board Policy #6001.1). A student’s day shall consist of three hundred thirty minutes of regularly scheduled instruction required by Florida Statutes (reading, writing, mathematics, language arts, science, social studies, health, physical education, art, music and computer education). Florida State Standards are designed to ensure that all students graduate college and career ready. They are benchmarked and raise the bar on what is expected. The standards require our students to solve complex problems, think critically, read and write proficiently ad develop and defend their ideas effectively. “Skill/strategy grouping" for students requiring reinforcement will prevent students from falling "through the cracks" in skill/strategy development. High achieving students usually absorb concepts quickly and easily. They do not require the same review and reinforcement as other students. These students may become bored and uncooperative when forced to review work that is already understood. High Achieving students should be provided academic opportunities that involve students in advanced levels of content and thinking processes. By extending the curriculum through the use of a variety of sources, mediums, research, and literature, students’ interest is stimulated and they absorb information and acquire skills at their own pace. The Principal must approve such trips before specific plans are made. Local trips shall be permitted which have a value in meeting educational objectives. An introductory academic lesson or research is to be done prior to the trip and an activity is to follow the trip (literary activity is suggested).School transportation vehicles may be available for all trips sponsored within the spirit of the above statement. Such trips, however, must not interfere with the regular bus schedules. Teachers planning local field trips must adhere to the following guidelines:Complete a Field Trip Request Form specifying the destination, the method of transportation, and the period of absence from school. This is the responsibility of the Team Leader/designee. School buses are available at $47.00 per hour and are available from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.Limit field trips to not more than four per year. However, no field trip will be scheduled between January and April for grades 3-5 due to testing. (Kindergarten is allowed five trips almost any time during the year.)Submit the Field Trip Request Form to the Principal/designee for initial approval. (A field trip is the ONLY activity that does not require an activity form, as the field trip form serves that purpose.) After the Principal’s initial approval the form will be forwarded to the Assistant Principal to place dates on the Activity Calendar and submission to the district, when necessary.The form will then be returned to the Team Leader to complete all necessary arrangements with the organization, firm, and/or owner of the property to be visited. Obtain from parents and/or guardian of all students who plan to participate in a field trip written permission for their children to be away from school during the time required for the trip. Permission slips are to be submitted to the Front Office Staff one week prior to departure. Any money collected for a field trip must be recorded and receipted prior to the trip. We must adhere to this deadline. Receipt of Monies Envelopes must be returned to the Office Manager to be filed for audit. Do not discard. Two lists of students actually participating in the field trips must be prepared; one is given to the bus driver, the other is given to the Assistant Principal.Application for use of school buses for aforementioned purposes must be the date of the anticipated trip. Forms are available see the Assistant Principal.There must be one (1) chaperone for every ten (10) elementary students. Chaperones must be present before students board the bus. Pre-school children of chaperones cannot go on buses. A list of students for each bus shall be provided to the driver immediately prior to each trip. Responsibility for student behavior rests entirely upon the chaperones. Only in emergency situations should the bus driver need to be concerned with the student conduct. Order and discipline are absolutely necessary for safe driving. There must be classroom conduct, except for ordinary conversation while in route. Students must not stand up or move from their seats while the bus is in motion. Absolute silence is necessary at the railroad crossings while the bus is stopped. Food, soft drinks and SMOKING are prohibited at all times, including chaperones. 10. Each driver turns in a trip report after he/she returns with the exact times. This is placed in a file in the transportation office. If it is unfavorable, the principal is contacted and a report is sent to the school. 11. If the field trip interferes with the regular lunch period, special class, or resource class, those individuals must be informed prior to the field trip. The cafeteria manager and the office need to be notified at least three weeks in advance. Students may be denied the privilege of participating in field trips if behavior has been disruptive, against the Students Code of Conduct, or has been in violation of Eagle Point rules and regulations. Parents shall give written permission for their child to participate in an authorized field trip. Children may participate in a field trip only if the signed permission slip is on file.All staff chaperones must complete a TDA two (2) weeks prior to chaperoning a fieldtrip. All chaperones must cleared. Please see Assistant Principal if you have any questions/concerns about field trip procedures.FOOD FOR SPECIAL EVENTSThe Health Department requires that all food served to students at school be prepared only in licensed food service establishments such as grocery stores and restaurants. Food prepared in private homes may not be served to students at school. This is a State Law.Food may also be prepared in classrooms following healthy and sanitary practices and under adult supervision.Students’ birthdays may be celebrated by a simple treat such as a cupcake or cookies at lunch. FUNDRAISERS Before arranging a fundraiser, approval from the Principal is mandatory. This must be done 10 days prior to the start of the fundraiser. A completed SAN Form must be emailed to the Principal for online collections.A financial report must be submitted for yearbooks not sold. The books must be retained in a box and given to the bookkeeper to placed in the school’s vault. All items must be accounted for. Fundraisers are subject to audit scrutiny and rules and regulations must be adhered to.HEALTHHEALTH SCREENINGSFlorida Statute requires the Broward County School's to conduct health screenings, including vision and hearing, for students new to Florida schools, referred for exceptional education assessment, and specified grade levels. Heights and weights are charted annually in grades K-3. If a problem is detected, parents will be notified. If they do not want their child to participate in this program, parents are to notify the school in writing.SPECIAL HEALTH CONCERNSThe special health concerns of students need to be brought to the school's attention. A notebook containing this information is located in the main office. Please bring any health concerns to administration.? Homework should be a productive extension of the school program. School Board Policy Accountability states in rule 11, Research Based Characteristics of Quality Schools, that maintaining high expectations for student achievement includes “homework regularly assigned and graded.”All grades are expected to read or be read to for 20 minutes, daily.In grades 1-5, agenda books will be used to strengthen students’ organizational skills and to facilitate home/school communication.Teachers are reminded to send home no more than two hard covered textbooks per evening, if necessary. Books are now available on line through BEEP.The following guidelines will assure that homework activities result in a satisfying session for both student and parent:? Assignments should be on the student’s independent level.? Directions should be clear and specific. ? Copies should be clear and readable.? Homework emphasis should be on strengthening basic skills, not introducing new skills.? Homework should be checked and feedback provided to maximize it’s value. ? Voluntary “extra credit” homework (projects) should be encouraged.? Homework should not be used as a punishment, as this negatively impacts attitude toward this important activity.? Each teacher must have organized, specific plans completed one week in advance. Lesson plans are an important part of the curricular audit trail and are considered legal documents. Additionally, they are essential when a substitute teacher must continue students’ instruction in the absence of the regular teacher.In all subject areas, indicate work to be taught so that a substitute teacher, auditor, principal, etc. can readily identify standards, directed and independent activities, teacher edition pages, student pages, number of problems to be assigned, tests to be given, ESOL strategies, BECON programs, worksheet titles or numbers, manipulatives to be used, etc.General and specific time schedules, specials’ schedules, daily work, seating charts and any other information should be noted, including students in exceptional programs. Plan books and grade books will be reviewed periodically by administration and/or team leader. They are collected at the end of the school year and stored for federal/state/district audit purposes. If teachers use the electronic plan book or electronic grade book, lesson plans are to be printed out weekly and placed in plan book.READING PLANSIndividual reading lesson plan sheets will be used. Your reading plans should be consistent throughout the year and reflect plans for various reading groups at different reading levels. Teachers may choose between two reading plan formats. All reading plans are to be kept along with the plan book.SUBSTITUTE PLANS1. A substitute folder will be issued. It should include an emergency set of plans for 2 days and is kept in the classroom on the right corner of the teacher’s desk. Plans are updated after each use and at least once each marking period.2. In addition to the teacher's regular plan book, each teacher will maintain a file of extra sets of worksheets (for the substitute) for language arts, math and other topics, which could be used as a review in the event that the substitute teacher has extra time. The exact location of these materials should be noted in your plan book or in the substitute folder.MEDICATIONBoard Policy #6305 specifies “school personnel shall not administer or dispense prescribed medication to any student without thee written consent of the parent and a completed treatment plan signed by the physician. The principal or designee shall administer prescribed medication only when the appropriate written consent and treatment plan is on file. Medications are kept under lock and key and only dispensed through the clinic. When dispensed, it will be under the supervision of the school principal or designee, in accordance with the treatment plan, and a medication log maintained.”No elementary student shall transport medications to or from school, including aspirin or cough drops. A teacher may not allow students to take any medicine, including aspirin, while under their supervision. Specific arrangements will be made should medicine be required during off-campus activities. PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION (PTA)Eagle Point is fortunate to have a very active Parent Teacher Association. A great deal of assistance is provided to the school yearly, both in volunteer hours and purchases. All staff members are encouraged to join and support the activities of PTA at Eagle Point. Staff is also encouraged to attend PTA meetings.Please do not submit individual requests to PTA for supplies or other materials. School needs and requests will be formally presented to PTA through the Principal/designee. PROFESSIONAL GROWTH PLAN (PGP)Each year, teachers will develop a Professional Growth Plan (PGP) for their personal professional development. (Appendix W and copy of the School Board Policy; view policy via the intranet at (See Assistant Principal for a copy of the form)PROGRESS MONITORING PLAN (PMP)A new electronic PMP form must be generated each year if a student meets the PMP criteria. Teacher will submit name of student to be placed on a PMP to the Reading Coach/designee with accompanying data. Remember that a PMP is a legal document. Classroom teachers are held accountable for implementing interventions. A conference must be held with the parent of a student placed on a PMP. Placement on a PMP will be noted on the conference form. You may not exit a child from a PMP until the standardized test scores are available at the end of the current school year and the student meet exit criteria. You can place a student on a PMP at any time during the school year based on teacher judgment, but that student will not be exited until standardized test scores are available at the end of the current school year and the student meets exit criteria.ESOL students should not be placed on a PMP if they are making progress. If they are more than 2 years, then use the regular criteria for placement on a PMP.ESE students can be placed on a PMP, if needed. Document interventions and student progress. File documentation and assessments in students’ cum folder.PROPERTY PASSESStaff members may check out certain types of equipment to use off campus for purposes related to school. A property pass must be completed (including the Principal’s signature for approval) PRIOR to equipment leaving the school. Staff members will be responsible for the safe return of this equipment. Property passes are available from the Tech Specialist.REPORTING PUPIL PROGRESSPROGRESS REPORTSReport cards are issued at the end of every nine weeks of school and cover approximately 45 days of school. A student MUST be in attendance in a Broward County School FOR twenty-five (25) days to receive a COMPLETE report card. You may indicate behavior and study skill growth if the child has been in class long enough to assess.PRINCIPAL’S HONOR ROLE CRITERIA: (Grades 3-5)? All conference forms are to be filed in CUM folders.INTERIM REPORTSBoard Policy 6000.1 states, "Not later than midway between marking periods, an interim report shall be sent to parents of students who are experiencing difficulty including, but not limited to, the following: Failing grades, Students who are on a Progress Monitoring Plan – PMP, A drop of two or more letter grades, Unacceptable behavior and/or Excessive absences/tardiness.If you suspect interim reports are not being brought home, mail them to parents and/or guardians. Interim reports will be submitted to administration for review approximately one week prior to the day that they are issued (via PINNACLE). Check the school’s calendar for exact dates. PROMOTION/RETENTION POLICY #6000.1Board Policy #6000.1 states: When determining the placement of students, the following criteria shall be considered: Academic performance, Grades, Level of social and emotional development, which may include reviews by the school’s CPST/RtI/MTSS.A conference is required by the school between the classroom teacher and the parent on or before May 1st for each student being considered for retention to discuss the skills in which the student is deficient and to review the educational prescription for remediating the skills. This prescription shall include a recommendation for promotion or retention based upon all available data. If the recommendation is for retention and if the parent disagrees with the teacher, a staffing shall be held which includes the classroom teacher, guidance counselor, principal and other staff members selected by the principal. The parent (or the parent's substitute when the parent is unable to attend) shall be invited to attend the conference. Backup information such as test results, sample of classroom work and other information the staff feels pertinent shall be discussed. The professional staff will recommend grade placement. The principal shall have the final authority for appropriate grade placement of students within the limitations of Board Policy and Florida Statutes. Please remember that the parents do NOT make the determination whether or not their child will be retained. CRITERIA FOR CONSIDERING RETENTIONThe District criteria will be used when considering a student for retention.*Other issues to consider are:Is the child performing significantly (a year or more) below his/her potential?Has the child been retained previously? What grade?What is the child's IQ? (90-110: Average, 70-89: Below Average)Has the child ever been referred? What recommendations were made?Is the child in any "special" classes? RETENTION PROCEDURES:The following timeline will be established:Third Quarter Interim Report/Report Card - Notify parents on Interim and Report Card of possibility of retention. Submit to office the names of all possible retentions. As the year progresses, names may be eliminated.End of Third Quarter–Conference documenting recommendation for retention due. All parents of students being considered for retention will be notified in writing by May 1st.Fourth Quarter Interim Report - Official list of retainees are due.SAFETY AND SECURITYTHE BUDDY SYSTEMStudents will always travel about campus with a "Buddy". Students sent to the clinic should travel with two “buddies.” VISITORSVisitors are always welcome at the school, but to ensure the safety of all children, they must first stop at the office to receive a visitor's pass. Please remind parents to bring forgotten lunches, raincoats, books and other belongings to the office. We will notify the teacher during planning.SCHOOL ALERTA special public address announcement of "School Alert" shall alert teachers that a building security situation exists. The procedure to follow is to not allow children in/out of the room.SCHOOL SAFETY The Eagle Point Safety Plan is located in the Appendix. Staff members are required to be completely familiar with all aspects of the School Safety Plan.PLAYGROUND SAFETYInstructional personnel are responsible for the supervision of students under their care. Students must be under constant visual supervision of instructional personnel, at all times.School safety should be discussed the first few weeks of school. Review proper use of playground equipment. Anyone not using the equipment properly should be removed from the equipment, immediately. The following list of safety procedures for playground equipment should to be observed at all times:PLAYGROUND SAFETY PROCEDURESAll equipment should be inspected to make sure it is not wet or hot before students use it. Equipment should be dry to prevent slipping and cool to prevent burns.The playground area must be kept clean. Unsafe, unsightly, and distracting debris such as rocks, broken glass, and trash must be constantly removed. This is everyone's responsibility. ***MAKE SURE STUDENTS PICK UP PERSONAL ITEMS BEFORE LEAVING AREA***Only one person is allowed on a section of equipment at a time. The only exception is the horizontal ladder on which a second student may begin when the first pupil has traveled halfway across the ladder.Students are not allowed to push or shove. Teachers should reprimand young ones who violate this rule. Teachers should explain the dangers of pushing and if a student continues to violate the rule, he/she is not allowed to participate in the activity. Teachers must know the health status of each student. All written excuses are to be honored.Gum chewing is not permitted at anytime during the school day. Teachers need to be particularly alert to this school rule during physical activities as chewing gum could become embedded in the trachea and cause suffocation. Teachers should stress proper dress for active participation involving hanging, swinging, crawling, climbing and jumping. A safe grip around the bars is important. The thumbs should always be around the bar opposing the fingers. Teachers should remind pupils of this often. Unsafe playground procedures that are observed are to be reported to the Administration.PLAYGROUND SAFETY RULESGo over these playground rules with your students at the beginning of the year and at regular intervals thereafter.1. Be courteous and a good sport.2. Follow game and play equipment rules. 3. Stay within playground boundaries and away from off-limits areas.4. Play ball games only in designated areas.5. Use school equipment; do not bring toys or balls from home.6. Avoid wearing loose jewelry and do not carry pens or pencils on the playground.7. Do not push, pull or trip others.8. Do not play rough or fight.9. Throw only those items needed in organized ball games. 10. Climb only on structures intended for climbing. 11. Do not play chase games or tag on equipment. SUBPOENASNotify the Principal immediately if you receive a subpoena related to Eagle Point Elementary or a student. Do not release information to parents or attorneys related to a subpoena or court case without notifying the Principal. Broward County has specific procedures that must be adhered to. RELEASE OF INFORMATIONInformation regarding students or student records may only be provided to the child’s natural parents, foster parents, guardian ad litem, or to Children and Family Services if conducting an active investigation of child abuse. Therefore, no information or records may be provided to step parents, other relatives, or friends without written authorization from the parents or legal guardians.Release of Information forms must be completed by parents prior to staff members communicating with outside agencies such as psychologists, doctors or tutors.***It is always suggested to check with Guidance or Administration when dealing with records. SUBSTITUTES It is the responsibility of the teacher to arrange for a substitute. A teacher may call a substitute personally, but you MUST call Sub Finder to receive a job number. PLEASE call in as soon as possible after securing the substitute. Do NOT wait until the morning to call Sub Finder! The jobs are pulled around 5:00 a.m. In an extreme emergency, contact the substitute coordinator before 6:30 a.m.In the event no substitute is required, your absence must still be reported to Sub Finder. You are to select the “No Sub” option.On your return, you will be asked to sign a Certificate of Absence. A copy of this certificate will be given to you for your personal files. It is your responsibility to verify leave balances, which is printed on the payroll checks and can be found on ESS. If there are any discrepancies, please notify the payroll contact (office manager).Please Note:Personal leave shall not be granted on the day preceding or following a holiday or during the first or last week of school. The first week of school starts on day one of the 196-day work calendar and the last week of school concludes on the final day of said calendar. An employee shall have the right to use sick leave in one-half or full day units.Any change from these policies must be discussed with the Principal.If you need to leave before 2:15 p.m. any day (or before the children leave) you must obtain a substitute. (see Administration) SUPERVISION OF STUDENTSProper supervision helps to establish a safe and secure environment for children. Children should never be left unsupervised. The teacher is to escort classes to and from special area classes, the cafeteria, assemblies, etc. It is important to make sure that the teacher can see ALL children when in line. It is important not to let children proceed without the teacher. Please do not send students anywhere alone and never leave them outside unsupervised. All children are to travel in pairs (triplets for the clinic). It is the joint responsibility of all staff members to provide guidance to any child that is observed using inappropriate behaviors on campus.Children should not be placed outside the classroom alone for any reason.TECHNOLOGY (under construction)All teachers will be issued a laptop per SBBC procedures. We are a D5/D4 school whereby all students in grades 4 & 5 use computers for all academic needs. There are limited textbooks in these classrooms. Students in grades 5 are allowed to take home laptops per SBBC procedures. This same process will be used for grade 4, prior to the end of the year. Grade 3 is awaiting laptops to be used in the classrooms, too. TELEPHONE AND FAX USAGESchool Board Policy 3201 states that any and all long distance phone calls and faxes made for school business shall be properly logged on Form 3035B, obtained from the bookkeeper. Please do not call directory assistance from the school telephones.Long distance calls and faxes may not be made for personal use. Please charge the call to your home phone or you may use a calling card.In order to eliminate unnecessary classroom disruptions, telephone calls will not be put through to your room unless it is an emergency. If you receive an emergency call, someone will come to your classroom in order for you to take the call in a private location. If you are expecting an important call, please notify administration.?TEMPORARY DUTY AUTHORIZATION (TDA)Temporary duty shall be defined as the employee performing his/her duties in a different location other than the regular assignment including any type of field trip. Temporary Duty Authorization (TDA) forms are available in the Admin Conf on CAB. A TDA is required when a teacher is not performing his/her regular duties. A TDA is required for in-county and out-of-county workshops, conferences, meetings, field trips, pleted TDA forms, along with a flyer or description of the event, must be submitted to the Principal for approval and processing at least ten days prior to the event. Principal approval must be granted before attending any field trips/workshops/events. Please do not assume that approval has been granted to attend a workshop just because you completed and submitted the TDA. The TDA is an audit item, and must therefore be completed in ink. When all members of a team fill out a TDA, please make sure that they are all handed in together by the Team Leader.If you do not have a signed TDA, you are not permitted to attend an event. The day will be coded to personal time. TEXTBOOKSA school-wide inventory system to track textbooks has been initiated. It is imperative that all teachers take the time to code all textbooks in their classrooms prior to distributing them to students. The same coding will be used across grade levels. This will provide a system for returning a found textbook to the correct teacher.Team Leaders will assign each teacher on their team a letter of the alphabet - beginning with “A.” This list will be turned into the front office as well as to the textbook coordinator, so that if a textbook is turned into the office, someone can check the list to identify which teacher the textbook should be returned to. Each teacher will code their books with the grade level, the letter of the alphabet assigned, and the book number. It is suggested that teachers number student books using the same number given to them on your roster.An example of the coding Teacher A (third grade) codes his/her books as follows:3A-13A-23A-3Teacher B (third grade) codes his/her books as follows:3B-13B-23B-3It is the responsibility of the teacher to attempt collecting money on any missing textbook. Forms to be used when attempting to collect money for a missing textbook. Place the completed form in the textbook coordinator’s mailbox. He/she will fill in the price of the textbook and return the form to the teacher so that he/she can send home a notice to parents. A form letter to parents is also included in Appendix. Any money collected for missing textbooks should be identified on the form and submitted to the textbook coordinator. Please understand that any money collected for missing textbooks is returned directly to the textbook fund allowing for the purchase of additional books.TUTORINGPer school board policy #4202 “By maintaining a high quality instructional staff and providing a rich, varied curriculum, the need for individual tutoring should be minimized. Every effort should be made to help the student with educational problems before recommending that parents engage a tutor.”In some occasions, when the idea of tutoring is brought up by the parent, the following rules and regulations must be followed.A teacher may not receive compensation for tutoring any student while that student is assigned to one of his/her classes. (Also be careful about tutoring students immediately following having been the teacher. You do not want any notion of impropriety.)Policy also states that teachers who receive compensation for tutoring shall not use public school facilities for such purpose. Refrain from making recommendations to parents. Refer parents to the Guidance Counselor for assistance. VIDEOTAPINGThe use of videotapes can sometimes be a beneficial supplement to classroom instruction when used judiciously and with appropriate follow-up activities. Only age-appropriate and academically oriented videos should be shown. Due to very strict copyright laws, certain conditions must exist in order to show anything that has been taped off-air.If teachers adhere to conditions and if the program is of unquestionable educational value, programs may be utilized in class with administrative permission. All videos must have a “G” rating. It is an excellent idea to preview any videos to be shown if you are not familiar with the content. Teachers with the best intentions have been disciplined and have lost their teaching certificates as a result of showing inappropriate videos to students. Be careful with videos. The use of Videotapes in Schools in Accordance with the Copyright Law:* Taping Off-Air? Taping commercial television for Instructional purposes is permissible. (10 days)? Taping cable television is not permissible. (Example: Disney, HBO)* Use of Taped Material? May be used up to 10 days after tape date? May be used only on individual TV sets, not on closed circuit? After 45 days, tape must be erased? Taped material may not be altered or merged* Purchased or Rented Tapes? Many companies (Disney included) have granted permission to use material purchased by the Media Center.? Rented tapes must be used only on individual TV sets and must be a part of the instructional program.? Tapes must be previewed.? Tapes must be written into the teacher’s lesson plan book and the objective stated.? Tapes may not be shown through the closed-circuit system ? Tapes may only be shown to students (not PTA, etc.)? The staff member must file a Worker’s Compensation Injury form obtained from the Office Manager. Only doctors approved by the Workers’ Compensation Insurance can be seen for treatment, if your claim is accepted. Failure to fill out the form in a timely manner could jeopardize your claim or insurance coverage. XEROXINGUse of the Xerox copying machines in the front office is restricted to authorized staff, only. A small copier is available in the media workroom for teachers to make copies. Grade level copies are to be placed in the designated in-box in the mailroom. Teachers are given a set amount of copies per month, depending upon class numbers. Copy masters of poor quality should not be submitted for copying. Please remember that the materials sent home are a reflection of you and the school. Whenever possible, alternatives to worksheets are desirable, such as student-generated writing provides for excellent practice.Copy request forms should be submitted 2 days in advance and placed in the designated in-box in the mailroom. Your materials will be copied and returned in a fair and equitable manner, as they are received.
