After school @ your library is a new, groundbreaking and award-winning Broward County

Library program for children, made possible by collaboration with community partners.

Goal: Engage children in structured meaningful activities every day, supervised by adults who have experience working with children in groups.

Objectives:

• Bridge the digital divide, by guiding children in computer activities that build computer keyboard skills, searching skills, presentation skills and link to library resources.

Measure: Track computer skills of each child.

• Provide daily reading, language and communication skills practice.

Measure: Track the number of books read and discussed.

• Develop homework routines and provide assistance for homework completion.

Measure: Percentage of children using the library to complete homework assignments pre and post program.

Timeline:

Spring 2001: Planning began and produced partnerships with Broward County Public Schools for program design, curriculum content and training; Communities In Schools of Broward, Inc. for recruiting, hiring, procurement and payroll processing; and the A.D. Henderson Foundation, the Community Foundation of Broward and the Broward Public Library Foundation to fund the program.

January –June 2002: Five library branches offered the After school @ your library pilot program.

Sept. 2002 – June 2003: Federal funding awarded by IMLS through a LSTA grant from the State Library of Florida.

Summer 2003: National Association of Counties Award received for this innovative partnership program benefiting youth.

Jan. – June 2004: New funding partnership developed with the Children’s Services Council of Broward County to continue the program enlarged to serve children at 10 libraries by a grant that is renewable and multi-year.

Outcomes/Benefits From collaboration to celebration!

300+ children have developed successful homework routines; read and discussed over 500 books beyond assigned schoolwork; learned computer skills and explored library resources.
