The Medieval ManorDesign to Survive Project – Part 3Your nation rose to great heights. It became an empire that was likened to Rome itself, and you and your sons and daughters ruled justly and fairly. However, centuries have passed and your civilization has declined. Your great grandchildren have spread throughout Europe to start anew, but their task will not be an easy one. Life in the Middle Ages is treacherous. Roaming hordes of Vikings, Visigoths, and Mongols plague the land. Without empires such as Rome or your own, villagers must flock to Medieval Manors: self-sustaining towns designed with the sole purpose of survival. There was a time when you were great. Men followed your every word. Battles were fought and won for your honor. That time has passed, but perhaps, just perhaps, you can rise again. The world has changed; can you adapt to survive and thrive one more time…Follow the steps below as you create your Medieval Manor.InstructionsYou will have approximately 2-3 weeks to create this environment. At the culmination of your project, you will give an informational presentation that will count as a project/formative grade in History. You should name your project as follows: Name– Medieval ManorYou may not use cheats in this build. Doing so will result in a failing grade.Step 1 – Watch Towers - Locate a water source, preferably a river that can provide your manor with a reliable supply of water. Build two watch towers within 50 blocks of the water source so that each tower can provide your villagers with advanced warning of an attack from rampaging Vikings or Visigoths. Your towers should be at least 10 blocks tall, they should have space for 1-2 villagers to be placed on top, and you should add torches to the top for communication purposes. Your towers should be made of stone. Once you have completed this step continue to step 2.Step 2 – Walled City - You need protection. You can sleep in your watch towers for now, but you need a stone wall to keep out invaders. Build a wall that is at least 3 blocks tall. You can decide how large of a space you want to enclose within your wall, but you need to leave enough space inside your wall to build a manor house, a forge, a mill, and houses for your peasants and serfs. This wall is mandatory for your survival, so build it quickly. Once you have completed your wall continue to step 3.Step 3 – Serfs and Peasants Houses – Now you need a place to sleep, and so do your villagers. Build quickly because your towers have sighted a Viking scout party near your town. Making sure that you build INSIDE your wall, construct 4 small houses for your peasants and serfs. Each house should be made of wood or stone, and should be 5 blocks wide, 5 blocks long, and 3 blocks tall. Put a bed and a door on each house and know that you now have a place to sleep at night. There is no time to rest, though, so once you have completed your houses continue to step 4.Step 4 – Forge and Mill - You need a way to make tools and weapons and a place to store food and use your water supply. You can choose the order in which you construct these two buildings, but you need a small 5x5x5 building where you place 1 villager and a sign that lets villagers know this is your forge, where your blacksmith creates tools and weapons. You also need a second 5x5x5 building that is next to your water source. This will be your mill. Your mill needs to have 2 boxes inside that allow you to store crops and meat. It also needs to have a door that opens to your water source, and it needs 1 villager (your miller) inside. Once you have constructed your forge and your mill continue to step 5.Step 5 – Farmland - Now you need a steady food supply. Your farmland should be located outside of your protective wall, but close enough so that villagers can quickly run inside the wall if there is the threat of attack from a raiding Viking party. You will now cultivate farmland. Build 2 farms that are 8x8 in size. Both farms should have a water source. Plant crops in one farm and place cows, chicken, or pigs inside a fence or wall in your other farm. Once you have completed your farms, make sure you store meat in one storage box and crops in the other storage box in your mill. Once you have completed your farms and stored your goods continue to step 6.Step 6 – Manor House – Your village is starting to take shape. You have everything that you need to survive. The people believe in you and your population is growing. It is time to build a Manor House for you to live in. Your Manor House should be made of stone and it should be located inside the wall. Your Manor House should be 10x10x5. Make sure it has a large dining hall with a long table for your villagers to eat at, and that it has at least two bedrooms with beds. It also needs doors (because you need your privacy). Once you have completed your Manor House you can continue to step 7.Step 7 – Improved Wall – You have succeeded in building a fully functional Medieval Manor! Congratulations! But there is no time to rest. A large Viking army has recently destroyed a village only 50 kilometers away. Your village is growing and it needs better protection. First, increase the height of the wall that surrounds your village to 6 blocks high (this should be enough to ensure that invaders cannot easily sack your town). Once you have completed this step, add 2 more watch towers that are attached to your wall. This should give you 4 total watch towers. Build 2 separate entrances in your wall that are next to the 2 new towers that you just constructed, but make the entrances small so that only 1 villager or soldier can enter or exit at a time. Once you have completed your heightened wall and new towers you can continue to step 8.Step 8 – The Castle – As your village grows larger, your power and influence grow as well. You have successfully survived an attack by a Viking raiding party and peasants, serfs, and knights from nearby villages are now turning to you for protection. The king has even given you a royal title; you are now a Duke! Nothing says safety better than a castle. Since space is limited, you must add on to your Manor House to build your castle. Make sure you only use stone when you build. First, create a moat (ditch filled with water) surrounding your Manor House. Next, add a wall 3 blocks high around the roof of your manor house, along with 2 towers that are the tallest that you have constructed so far. Place 10 villagers on your roof who will act as archers to protect you from any threats. Also, place 1 villager at the top of each tower. Now you need to build a dungeon underneath your Castle to house prisoners. Include a trap door with steps leading down to the dungeon, and at least two small 3x3 rooms (each with 1 prisoner inside). Once you have your moat, your roof wall, your towers, your soldiers, and your dungeon, you need to design a flag to fly above your Castle. Choose 3 colors for your flag (each color will eventually stand for the 3 morals that are most important in your civilization). Once you have completed your Castle you can continue to step 9.Step 9 – Church/Cathedral - For the final aspect of your Medieval Manor, you will create a Church/Cathedral for the king, lords, knights, peasants, and serfs to gather in. Your church may be constructed of any type of stone. Your church should be at least 10 blocks long by 8 blocks wide. It should have glass windows and benches for people to sit on. Once you have completed your church, take a moment to reflect on what you have created. You now have an advanced Medieval Manor. Congratulations, you have adapted to changing times successfully. Over thousands of years you haven’t lost your touch, you are still a great leader. Eventually the Vikings and Visigoths will be gone, but a new challenge to your power awaits; a challenge you could never foresee: the Renaissance… ................
