Scenario
You are an independent researcher. You have been asked to investigate how e-commerce might improve a small business. You are required to write a report that explains how e-commerce can improve the performance of this small business.
Research and Planning
You should:
• choose a small business that has gaps in its use of e-commerce or does not use e-commerce well
• research the business’s products and/or services and its customers
• identify and analyse the e-commerce the business is using at the moment
• identify and research other types of e-commerce that the business could use
• recommend which of these types of e-commerce would be the best to help the business improve its performance
The focus of this Controlled Assessment Task is e-commerce. Innovative and advancing changes in technology have seen a huge expansion in this area. An increasing number of small businesses take advantage of the developments in e-commerce and utilise it in all areas of the business.
Definitions of e-commerce have moved on and this is no longer defined simply as transactions between people and businesses that are carried out via the internet. E-commerce now contains a host of other types of activities as well. Any form of business activity conducted electronically can be defined as e-commerce.
You need to interpret the definition of e-commerce in its broadest sense and produce a report on this.
Some examples include: -

• online auctions
• online bookings
• online purchases `
• online shopping
• websites
• e-mail
• mobile apps
• electronic payments
• internet banking
• text messaging
• social networking
• Contactless transactions.
STRUCTURE OF THE REPORT
1. Introduction – To the assignment
2. Definition of E- commerce
3. Market research Definition PR/SR (Advantages of both)
4. Identify and choose a SMALL business that has not yet fully transitioned in the use of E – Commerce
5. Research the business products and services
6. Identify and analyse the E – commerce the business is currently using – how does it help the business operate?
7. Identify and research other types of E – Commerce that the business could use.
8. Analysis of your findings – what does the business do well? – How does it help the business operate? Does it improve efficiency? Is it costly to use E – commerce, customer satisfaction/access
9. Recommend 3 types of E – commerce and how it would suitable for your chosen business, how will it enhance business performance?
10. Final recommendation – Using evidence to support your suggestion clearly explain how the use of E – commerce will improve business performance/customer satisfaction/increase in revenue and efficiency.
11. Appendix
The report should be well structured with ample research that should be used thought out your entire REPORT!!

Appendix should include the following:
• Small Business – Including the product and services sold and the types of customers the business has.
• Primary Research- Questionnaire/Interviews/Focus Groups/Observations
• Survey for customers/business owner
• Quotes from business retailers specialise in E – Commerce
• Statistics/ government articles/ publications/ blogs about the use if E – commerce in today’s Business World.
• Do a survey and give questionnaires to people in your local area to identify how E – commerce is used on a daily basis.
• Analyse your data ( tally chart/tables/graphs)
• Any relevant data or information ( Company brochure/leaflets)
• Collect both Quantitative and Qualitative data to use for your analysis and recommendations
