FOOD LIST FOR MIGRAINE PATIENTS

FOODS TO AVOID:

CAFFEINE Coffee, tea, iced tea, and cola; taper over two weeks, then none; decaffeinated versions are generally OK, although decaffeinated coffee and tea may be a problem for some people.

CHOCOLATE

CHEESE Avoid all cheeses except American, cream, and cottage cheese. Avoid cheese-containing foods, such as pizza.

MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE Chinese restaurant food, many snack foods, and prepared

foods. Accent and other seasoning products; MSG may be labeled as hydrolyzed vegetable/soy/plant protein, natural flavorings, yeast extract, Kombu, “broth”, and others; read labels.

YOGURT AND SOUR CREAM

NUTS Including peanut butter.

PROCESSED MEATS Those that are aged, canned, cured, marinated, tenderized, or contain nitrates or nitrites; including hot dogs, sausage, bacon, salami, and bologna.

ALCOHOL AND VINEGAR Especially red wine, champagne, and dark or heavy drinks; vodka is best tolerated; white vinegar is OK.

CITRUS FRUITS AND JUICES Oranges, grapefruits, lemons, limes, and pineapples, and their juices; vitamin C and citric acid are OK.

CERTAIN OTHER FRUITS Bananas, raisins, red plums, canned figs, and avocados.

CERTAIN VEGETABLES Broad, lima, fava, and navy beans; pea pods, sauerkraut, and onions.

CERTAIN BREAD PRODUCTS Fresh-baked, yeast-risen bread products, such as from a bakery, doughnut shop, or home.

ASPARTAME (NUTRASWEET)

MEDICATIONS TO AVOID:

CAFFEINE-CONTAINING Excedrin, Anacin, Fiorinal, Fioricet, etc.

MEDICATIONS

“SINUS”/DECONGESTANT Actifed, Sudafed, Dimetapp, Sine-Aid, Dristan, nasal

MEDICATIONS sprays, and all other “sinus” and cold products that contain decongestants; plain antihistamines, such as Chlor-Trimeton without decongestants are OK; check with your pharmacist.

COMMENT:

This headache prevention program may not be fully effective for at least a month. Most patients do not have food allergies. If you drink a lot of caffeine, caffeine withdrawal may be associated temporarily with increased headaches.

Even if you take migraine preventive medicine, you should try to stay on this diet, but after you have been on this diet for a while, you may want to experiment with certainly items you have avoided. If you eat or drink an item and you get recurrent symptoms, you should avoid that particular item.
