center457200Statement From Job Corps:Fifty years ago, Job Corps was established based on the conviction that our society must do more to empower and expand opportunities for millions of disadvantaged young people, to help them break free of their circumstances and build better lives. Job Corps represents the core American value that no matter who you are or where you come from, you should have the opportunity to succeed. Today, there are 125 Job Corps centers across the country, providing a second chance and changing lives – through education and job training for in-demand careers – to approximately 50,000 disadvantaged young people each year.Job Corps serves at-risk young people who are overcoming huge challenges, which can include deep poverty, homelessness, or multiple foster care placements. Yet Job Corps has been a success. Over half a century, Job Corps has helped more than 2.7 million young people become productive members of society.?Today more than 80 percent of Job Corps students go on to a career, enter the military, or enroll in higher education. The safety and security of Job Corps students and employees is our top priority. Job Corps has clear policies to address student discipline; when incidents arise, despite our best efforts to prevent them, Job Corps center operators are obligated to take immediate action and, when appropriate, to request assistance from law enforcement or expel students.Contractors that operate Job Corps centers and their employees are held to high standards of integrity, performance and accountability. When substandard practices or performance failures are discovered, Job Corps has a variety of penalties at its disposal. In August, Job Corps declined to renew a contract at the North Texas Job Corps center because of concerns about student discipline, and a new center operator will take over in just a few weeks. In addition, potentially fraudulent or criminal activity by center contractors or their employees, though historically rare, is referred to the Office of Inspector General or appropriate law enforcement agencies for investigation.Job Corps is always seeking ways to improve the program and is in the midst of a thorough review of its audit and oversight practices. Senior federal officials are conducting a national assessment of our controls to strengthen oversight. ................
