Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison

To Larry To my mother and father

And to Pop

Ring the bells that still can ring Forget your perfect offering

There is a crack, a crack in everything That's how the light gets in.

Author's Note

This book is a memoir, and is drawn from my own experience. All of the names (and in some cases distinguishing characteristics) of the people who lived and worked inside of the prisons where I was held have been changed to afford them their privacy. The exceptions are Sister Ardeth Platte and Alice Gerard, who kindly granted me permission to use their real names.
