onion root an d pr edict th e duration of each stage of mitosis. N ot all of the root c ells are dividing,

a s t h e i m a g e b e l o w s h o w s y o u ; o n l y t h e r e g i o n o f t h e r o o t c a ll e d t h e apical meristem will h a v e

cells that are actively dividing usin g mitosis. T ak e a look at a slice of this region of the onion root:

2. P erc ent of cells in eac h ph as e: For eac h ph as e, divide th e nu m b er of cells in th at ph as e by th e total nu m b er of cells. R ec or d this as a percent in th e s ec on d ro w an d ch eck th at this row adds up to 100 %.

Example: You counted 15 metaphase cells out of 60. 15/60 = 0.25 (25%)
