MEDICAL ASSISTANT

JOB DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Clinic Manager, the Medical Assistant performs a variety of administrative and clinical duties to assist medical providers.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Typical responsibilities and duties of the Medical Assistant include, but are not limited to:

• Escort patients to exam room and assist in determining medical problems.

• Take vital signs and assist patient flow through the clinic.

• Prepare exam rooms and instruments for examination and testing. Stock supplies and sterilize instruments.

• Maintain immunization inventory and re-order as necessary.

• Check appointment schedule and assist receptionist with medical providers’ schedules.

• Label and maintain proper storage for specimens and tests. Deliver tests and obtain results.

• Ensure that lab reports, x-rays, and other information are in the patient’s records.

• Assist medical providers with minor diagnostic procedures and treatments as directed.

• Issue outpatient materials. Assist with application and patient instruction.

• Schedule patients for testing procedures.

• Attend required meetings and in-services as requested.

• Maintain patient confidentiality.

• Complete lab requisitions and carry specimen to lab if applicable.

• Set up and assist with minor procedures as directed by medical provider.

• Prepare equipment to efficiently collect body fluids.

• Perform venipunctures on patients, identify, and label specimens.

• May call in prescriptions to pharmacy as directed by medical providers.

• Give injections as directed by medical providers.

• Provide translation when needed.

• Maintain monthly/daily logs.

• Attend training to maintain and/or improve skills.

• Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent. Phlebotomy certification. Must have knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe work environment. Ability to maintain quality control. Skill in assisting with a variety of treatments and medications as directed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The position requires a full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and hand-eye coordination. The Medical Assistant must be able to stand and walk for extensive periods of time. The position requires working under stressful conditions and may require irregular work hours. The Medical Assistant is frequently exposed to communicable diseases, toxic substances, radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a medical clinic environment.
