Chapter 2 Lesson One Notes

1. Two parts of weather are temperature and precipitation.

2. Temperature is a measure of how hot or cold a place is.

3. Precipitation is the water that falls to the Earth. Rain, snow, sleet, and hail are all forms of precipitation.

4. Climate is the pattern of weather in a region over a long period of time.

5. Three features affect climate in New York- distance from the equator, elevation and the presence or absence of large bodies of water.

6. The farther from the equator , the cooler the temperature.

7. The higher the elevation, the colder the climate.

8. The temperature of large bodies of water changes more slowly than the temperature of air.

9. New York State is subject to two types of extreme storms: hurricanes and blizzards.

10. Blizzards can strike any region.

11. Hurricanes form over the ocean and sometimes strike coastal areas.

12. Climate effects how people live- from the kinds of activities you can do outside at different times of the year, to how people make a living( crops that can be grown in their state's climate).

13. Farmers in New York choose crops that grow well in the state's climate. (apples, grapes)

14. Three New York cities that are among the snowiest are Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse.

15. Long Island and New York City are two areas of New York where a hurricane is most likely to strike.

16. Why does New York City have warmer average temperatures than Plattsburgh?

New York City is closer to the equator than Plattsburgh.
