Voices of the Common Person from around the World:

UN Character's Moment in Time

Research Project

Objective

This Marking Period Project is designed to focus your fictional character's perspective on a historical event in their country that they experienced. Country groups are encouraged to choose an event that is Very Significant to their country or to the individual roles within the group. This event must deal with some kind of conflict in the country or the effects of a recent civil war. Students will then identify and analyze through research the likely experiences their characters would have had during the event. All aspects of the characters' reactions to the events and opinions on the event MUST be supported through research.

All events chosen must have a link with actual or possible UN or other international organizations’ action or involvement with the event. The character should evaluate these actions as to their effectiveness in resolving the conflict.

Requirements

1. 3-6 page research paper (Double spaced, 12pt)

2. 4 sources {at least 2 types: printed (magazine, newspaper, text), computer based (authentic sites), or interviews if possible}

For the historical event, PRINT SOURCES ARE BEST TO GET A CLEARER UNDERSTANDING OF THE EVENTS.

If you use the Internet, the following sites are your best bets to explore aspects of your character:

then click WHAT’S IN A NAME DEMO and the SURF BY LANGUAGE for your character’s friends and family names.

then click on UN MEMBER STATES and HOMEPAGES OF THE PERMANENT MISSIONS TO THE UN IN NEW YORK

then click on FOREIGN EMBASSIES IN WASHINGTON DC and click on your country and then the URL if there is one.

then search by country

then search by country

The other options you have are CD Roms: Encarta, Cartopedia, 3D Atlas, & Maps 'N' Facts

There are plenty of Print Sources also: Culturegrams, Country Studies Books, Encyclopedias, etc.

3. All sources will have to be footnoted using Highland Park's approved bibliographical format. The Final Bibliography MUST be turned in with the project and must be typed and arranged alphabetically.

4. A visual depiction of the event or some aspect of the event whether symbolic or actual must be designed. BE CREATIVE: Book jacket, pamphlet, mobile, child's book, diorama, game, puzzle, collage, etc.
